Lectures, exhibits, choral and chamber music concerts, and an April 7 Holocaust remembrance are among the public events during April at Davidson College. On Saturday, April 6, president Carol Quillen will host a reception followed by the annual davidson college events bugstudent-run Dinner at Davidson fund-raiser for financial aid. Two nights of talks April 8-9 will focus on “Religious Ethics in Contemporary Society” and Wake Forest University professor Randall G. Rogan will give the annual Chidsey Leadership Lecture on April 9. At mid-month, athletic director Jim Murphy will give a public lecture on “Ethics in Sports.” And on April 17, the college will dedicate the latest addition to its outdoor sculpture college, “Waves III” by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa. Wednesday, April 3 – Wednesday, May 1
Senior Exhibitions.
Davidson College invites the public from Wednesday, April 3, through Wednesday, May 1, to exhibitions of artwork by senior class art majors. Receptions for an opening of work by Allison Cottle will be Thursday, April 4, at 11 a.m., and for an opening of work by Rebecca Worrell will be Wednesday, April 17, at 3 p.m. There is no charge to view the exhibitions, which are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends in the Smith Gallery of the Belk Visual Arts Center. Consumer Ethics Lecture.

Spanish Poetry.
Davidson College invites the public on Thursday, April 4, to a presentation by Fernando Operé, poet and Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Virginia. Operé will present “La Vuelta Mundo en 80 Poems,” an illustrated presentation in Spanish of his newest poetry collection beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Sprinkle Room of the Alvarez College Union. Chemistry Lecture.
Davidson College invites the public on Friday, April 5, to a chemistry lecture by Professor Michael Best from the University of Tennessee. Best will present “Synthetic Analogs of Cell Surface Ligands for studying Protein-Membrane Binding Interactions that Regulate Disease-Related Biological Processes” beginning at 2:30 p.m. in room B25 of Martin Chemistry Building. Dinner at Davidson Fundraiser
Davidson College students invite the public on Saturday, April 6, to join them in support of the college’s commitment to affordability through the fourth annual “D@D” event. In addition to the traditional dinner, this year’s event features an optional reception at the home of Davidson President Carol Quillen, and a free theatrical production written by Davidson senior Rodney Saunders Jr. and produced by his fellow classmates. Concert Series.
Davidson College invites the public on Sunday, April 7, to a concert by The Davidson Trio. Violinist Rosemary Furniss, cellist Alan Black, and pianist Dana Protopopescu will present the finale of this season’s Concert Series with a program that includes Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 3, Turina’s Fantasia for piano, violin and cello (“Circulo”), Op. 91, and Brahms’s Piano Trio in C Major, Op. 87, No. 2. History Lecture.
Davidson College invites the public on Wednesday, April 17, to a lecture titled “Trying Galileo,” by Thomas F. Mayer, Professor of History at Augustana College. Mayer will present his research on the trial of Galileo in 1616, and the scientist’s refusal to abandon the belief that the sun was the center of the universe. Mayer takes a legal and political approach revealing that Galileo arrogantly rejected a strong case in law that could have allowed him to avoid condemnation. Highlighting the trial leads to a different picture than the dominant view that Galileo fell victim to intolerance and superstition.
