Members of Davidson College’s Connor Eating House are working hard to increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research. Their annual Bosom Buddies event is getting geared up to start “flocking” lawns around Davidson and will culminate with a gala on March 23 at the Davidson College Lilly Gallery.
Money raised by the fundraiser, which Connor House has been putting on since 2001, supports Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test (www.Earlier.org), a Greensboro-based nonprofit organization that funds research grants for discovering an earlier biological test for breast cancer.
For members of Connor House, Bosom Buddies has personal significance. “We are an organization of over 160 young women,” said senior Leah Baldasare, one of the events organizers. “Today, 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. We know that we will all be impacted by this disease at some point whether through a diagnosis ourselves, or in a loved one. We decided that this was a cause around which we could all rally and to which we could dedicate ourselves.”
The March 23 gala will include dinner, drinks, a raffle, and a live an silent auction. The evening also features an address by Jill and Sean Gladieux, Greensboro police officers who have personally struggled against breast cancer. Tickets for the event are $60 per seat and can be purchased by emailing connorbosombuddies@gmail.com.
The event has grown significantly since 2001, when Connor House raised $3000 for Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test. Last year, the event brought in $90,000, enough to fund two research grants.
“We are so, so proud that we have been able to fund so many research grants — we feel that we are really making an impact in the fight to end breast cancer,” Ms. Baldasare said.
