Cancer survivors prepare to walk the first lap of Richardson Stadium at 2012’s Relay for Life

Davidson College will host its second annual Relay for Life Friday, March 15, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The event, which will include musical performances, games, and activities, will be held at Richardson Stadium from 7pm Friday to 7am Saturday.

Relay for Life is a national non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Individuals form teams to seek sponsorship, then spend an entire night walking to raise awareness for cancer research.

Last year’s Relay for Life at Davidson College raised almost $30,000, and this year’s organizers have set a goal of $35,000, of which more than $11,000 has already been raised. All funds raised will go toward research, education, and patient services. There is no entrance fee to the event itself, but participants must register online for a $10 fee.

In addition to fundraising activities participants conduct prior to the event, each team holds an on-site fundraiser that takes place during the event. Last year’s fundraisers included cook outs, bake sales, and massage tables. “These fundraisers allow the community to showcase their ingenuity and creativity in order to raise money for their team,” said Davidson senior Michael Sargent, who co-chairs the student committee organizing the relay.

“Relay for Life is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together under a cause that has affected us all,” said senior and committee co-chair Taylor Whitsett. “It is a time for us to fight back against a disease that has taken so many loved ones from our lives, and to celebrate those who have survived their battle. Overall, the event is a wonderful time and we hope to see much of the community there.”

Mr. Sargent said organizers hope this year’s second annual relay helps make the fundraiser an annual event.

Organizers will be hosting a dinner for cancer survivors prior to the relay at 5:30pm in Knobloch Campus Center on Friday. Anyone interested in honoring a friend or family member who has been affected by cancer or supporting Relay for Life can also purchase a luminaria bag at the event’s website.
