March is the perfect month to commit to being fit. If you start now there’s a good chance you’ll see results by May. And what better way to start your fitness journey than by running a local race? The words “running” and “race” are used liberally here. Feel free to walk, jog, run, come in last — whatever. Like the Nike ad says, “Just Do It.”
Races are great motivators. They’re fun, festive and, often, on the day of the event there is enough collective energy and adrenalin to get you through it. Plus, you get a T-shirt. And sometimes a medal … for participating, not for winning. Let’s be clear, folks. We’re talking about me. I’m not athletic.
I digress. A little background on myself: I feel uniquely qualified to mention being last. It has happened to me twice — the first time I brought up the rear was my first 5K in Birkdale several years ago. There’s nothing quite like the sound of a police car drowning out your heavy breathing while rolling up the course behind you. Talk about embarrassing.
The second time was my first half marathon, the Huntersville Half, in 2011. Yep, dead last. Although, I must say, that one ended with a lot of fanfare. The crowd waited, they cheered, they waved their arms in excitement as my legs bounded by cement at that point lumbered across the finish line…much later than everyone else. But, hey, I did it. That’s all that matters.
If any of this interests you, there’s a great race happening Saturday in Davidson. The CMS Run Too Overcome is hosting its annual 5K, 10K, and Kids Fun Run benefiting the unique funding and equipment challenges facing special needs children and teachers in the district. For more information on the mission visit the website at www.race2overcome.com. There you’ll also find a detailed course map along with the start times and entry fees. Registrations will be accepted on race morning, by cash or check.
So get up, get out, and get active. Make March the month you start moving. And you’ll be well on your way to looking good by May.
Look at this way, if you do sign up there’s good chance I’ll be behind you.
