Civil rights activist and professor Angela Davis visits Davidson this week for a lecture and discussion Tuesday night at the college. Tuesday night also brings the next Organ at Davidson concert, featuring organist Aaron Goen with an unusual accompanist – tuba player Daniel Knox. Gethsemane Baptist Church welcomes the Power Team for an anti-violence program. Davidson College baseball opens its 2013 season with a three-game series against George Washington. And Saturday morning has the Davidson Farmer’s Market with a special event: a “Breakfast of Champions beer and chili tasting. On Saturday night, the local chapter of USA Dance hosts a Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball at the Havana Ballroom in Kenton Place, Cornelius. Details about those and other events below.

Archaeology lecture, 7:30pm, Belk Visual Arts Center Semans Lecture Hall, Davidson College – UNC-Chapel Hill anthropology professor and archaeologist Dr. Vincas P. Steponaitis will present an illustrated lecture on his recent work at an ancient Native American site in Mississippi. The lecture, “Mound Construction and Ritual at Feltus, an Ancient Ceremonial Center in Mississippi” (a late woodlands site ca. Power Team at Gethsemane, 7pm, Gethsemane Baptist Church of Lake Norman, 565 Jetton St., Davidson – The Power Team, a world class group of athletes who perform exhibitions of power, strength, and speed in an anti-drug and anti-violence campaign, will appear twice this month at Gethsemane. Theater: “The Vagina Monologues”, 7pm, Davidson College Chambers Building Lilly Family Gallery – Davidson College student groups host a production of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues,” in a fundraiser for the local non-profit Safe Alliance [18]. The groups say their goal with the production is to increase awareness, to stop violence against women and girls, to catalyze dialogue surrounding the empowerment of women, and to raise funds for Safe Alliance. Environmental studies lecture, 11:05am, Davidson College Dana Hall, Room 146 – Lecture: “From Molecules to Metapopulations: Assessing Endocrine Disruption in Aquatic Life,” by biologist Susanne Brander, University of North Carolina, Wilmington. She is currently examining the impact of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in aquatic life. The lecture is free, part of the college’s spring Environmental Lecture Series.
