Resolutions, and a pledge to parents

Normally, I begin each year with a list of resolutions dealing with my health, well-being, and happiness. This year is a little bit different in that last year, itself, was different. Sure, I want to get fit, eat healthy, and pursue the things I enjoy. But, this year I also want to prepare myself. Let me explain.
2012 brought a series of medical setbacks that for the first time ever have me facing my parents’ mortality. Of course, I knew in some strange, child-like way they wouldn’t live forever. However, I do believe I took them for granted and assumed they’d always be around. So, this year I want to prepare myself for the stark reality that is the opposite.
In 2013, I resolve to spend more time with them and make sure that time is well spent. I resolve to ask more questions about their past and learn more about what it was like for them growing up. I resolve to capture more of their stories in their own words for posterity. I resolve to have frank discussions with them and my siblings about unpleasant subjects too uncomfortable to address. I resolve to remove my head from the sand and pretend the inevitable won’t happen. Because eventually it will. And I want to be prepared.

I recently sent a picture of me and my sisters to my mother with a funny little anecdote explaining the circumstances surrounding it. She laughed and replied that we were her legacy. I take that title seriously and hope to do her legacy proud.
