^[1]A local filmmaker, a horticulturist, a world traveler and a Davidson political scientist talking about health care reform will be on the agenda at Davidson Senior Scholars programs coming January through April. Senior Scholars meetings are monthly, offering talks by local experts on a variety of topics. All meetings are at the Davidson Parks & Recreation offices, 416 Armour St.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 16, 1pm

“Story Telling Through Film” with Scott Galloway, Director of Susie Films, Charlotte. Susie Films is a full-service film and television production company, and has produced more than 800 television programs for networks such as ABC, A&E, ESPN, Food Network, HGTV, History Channel and Lifetime. Among Susie Films’ award winning productions are “A Man Named Pearl” and “Overdraft,” a one-hour documentary about the United States’ national debt and recently released on PBS.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 13, 1pm

“Landscape Gardening in an Environmentally Fragile World,” with Michael Jones, Agronomist, Entomologist, Horticulturist. Mike will help us understand how landscaping affects our environment, and will provide useful tips on landscaping our residences and businesses. Mike earned his B.S. and M.S. from Auburn University. His career includes more than 25 years with Auburn, Virginia Tech and NC State in horticultural research and extension programs. For the past 12 years he has served as Director and Lead Instructor of the Landscape Gardening Program at Cape Fear Community College where he planned and developed facilities and course curriculum. He taught classes in Landscape Design, Plant Materials, Turf Management, Greenhouse Production and Horticultural Pest Management.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 1pm

“A Few of the World’s Fascinating Places” with Margot Leydic-Boyd, whose travels to 60 countries and work in Regional Planning and Organizational Development have given her a unique perspective on diverse places and people, will share photos and stories. Margot defines “fascinating places” as areas of the world which have diverse landscapes, populations, and religions, as well as interesting, if not tumultuous, histories. She takes us on a tour of her favorite fascinating countries on four continents: South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Margot enthusiastically addresses the geography, history, and cultures of each of the four continents.

TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 1pm

“Health Care in America: the 10 Second Solution” with Mary Thornberry, Professor of Political Science (retired), Davidson College. Mary has taught health care policy, constitutional law and statistics for 31 years. She will guide us as we puzzle over the complicated issues involving health care reform, and lead us to one suggestion of what would ‘solve the problem’ and why it will never happen.
