Mary Lou Peeples

Mary Louise Kapp Peeples will be at the Wicks organ keyboard on Tuesday, Oct. 16, for the second Organ at Davidsonconcert of the season at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

Also on the schedule: A DCPC chorale concert, a performance by Tokyo Street String Quartet, the next Music at St. Alban’s concert with Molasses Creek, and the Huntersville Brass at Mt. Zion United Methodist.

Mrs. Peeples was the first American organist to give a recital at the Eglise St. Louis des Invalides in Paris. She received her bachelor’s of music degree cum laude from Salem College, her master’s of music degree at Eastman College of Music, and studied two years in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain.

The concert begins on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of DCPC. It’s free, though donations are encouraged to help expand the six-concert series. A reception with the organist follows the recital.

Mrs. Peeples’ program will feature music by Bach, Reger, Koomans (a 20th century Dutch composer), Messiaen, Walther, and a composition by her husband Wade Peeples. Trumpeter Mark Dulin will join her to play Hovhanness’ “Prayer of St. Gregory” and a piece by Margaret Sandresky.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mrs. Peeples was for 22 years chairman of Organ Studies, Chapel Organist and Associate Professor of Music at Judson College, Marion, Alabama. During that time she performed as harpsichord soloist with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, also featured on Alabama Public Radio and NPR.

She served churches in Selma and Birmingham, Alabama and was Director of Music Ministries at First Christian Church in Winston-Salem and Organ Chair for the N. C. Music Teachers Association. Mrs. Peeples also has been organist and accompanist for several Moravian Music Festivals as well as performing organ recitals.

Future Organ at Davidson recitalists are John Cummins (November 13), Jane Cain (Jan. 8), Aaron Goen (Feb. 12 and the Annual Bach Birthday Bash (March 19).

Tryon Street String Quartet, Sunday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m., Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 201 Fairview Rd., Mooresville – The quartet, featuring Charlotte Symphony’s Principal Cellist Alan Black, will perform as part of the Saint Patrick’s Solas Leighis concert series.
