Davidson grad to talk about his ‘Civil Rights Journey’

[1]Joseph Howell will talk about his book “Civil Rights Journey: The Story of a White Southern Coming of Age During the Civil Rights Revolution” on Friday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. at Davidson College’s Chambers Building, Room 1062, Davidson College.
Mr. Howell is a 1964 Davidson graduate who grew up as a white southern male. At Davidson, he became involved in the civil rights movement.
Mr. Howell and his wife, Embry Martin Howell, daughter of former Davidson President Grier Martin, were part of an effort by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and other volunteers to bring full citizenship to African Americans in southwest Georgia in the 1960s. What they learned about America’s strengths and weaknesses, violence and bravery, about southern blacks and whites, and about themselves are the subject of Mr. Howell’s book.
