Summit Coffee has teamed with Davidson College professor Paul Studtmann for an art installation entitled “Nail Art.” They’ host an the opening of this gallery with an event Friday, Aug. 24, from 6-8pm at Summit. Also below, news about an art opening next week for Davidson College’s annual faculty exhibition, and other art news.

Beer and wine will be sold at the Summit opening, and music starts immediately following the opening at 8:00pm, featuring Justin Fedor and H.L. Ruth of Charlotte’s The New Familiars. The exhibit, up now through the end of September, is featured on the second floor at Summit Coffee, located at 128 S. Main Street in Davidson, N.C.

Studtmann’s “Nail Art” begins with a board that the artist spray paints. He then takes nails, grip them with a pair of plyers, dip them into paint, place them on the board, and nail them in. Studtmann then tips the board to get the paint to drip where he wants it. Other materials play a role in the work: caulk, cotton balls, paper towels, tiny bird houses, flowers. Unlike most artists, Studtmann gets his supplies from Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and Michael’s.

FACULTY ART SHOW

Wednesday, August 29 – 7-9 p.m., Van Every Gallery at Davidson College Belk Visual Arts Center, North Main and Griffith streets, Davidson – Opening reception for the 2012 Faculty Exhibition, including works by Hagit Barkai, Darren Floyd and Tyler Starr. Nature photographs by Michael Tipton are on display through the end of August in the atrium gallery at Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., Davidson. The exhibit may be seen weekdays during business hours, and at other times during town meetings and events.

Michael Tipton is a Charlotte resident who works in Cornelius. He is a member of the Mooresville Artists Guild. A relative newcomer to photography, enjoys shooting nature, from animals to plants to cloud formations. “Nature always fascinates and surprises me with unexpected beauty,” he says.

“I enjoy showing others my work, and I appreciate their feedback – both positive and negative. However, I do have to admit I do enjoy the positive feedback more,” he says.
