this week bugBack to school activities and high school and college sports join outdoor concerts, meetings and other events in the area this week. Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation & Culture hosts two outdoor movies in its cinema series – “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” Wednesday at Kenton Place and “Soul Surfer” Saturday at Town Hall. Davidson-based Sunday Union has a gig Wednesday night at Flatiron Kitchen, while Summit Coffee has a full lineup of local music, including Justin Fedor and HL Ruth IV (of the New Familiars) on Friday and Davidson Local Saturday.

Meanwhile, Our Town Cinemas in Davidson has gone digital in the projection booth. The theater made the switch this month to prepare for Hollywood’s ending of 35mm reels. On the schedule this week: “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” joins “The Bourne Legacy,” “The Campaign,” and “Hope Springs” on the schedule. See the movie showtimes at right.

Auditions for “Baby”, 7 p.m. Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour St., Davidson. – Auditions for the Davidson Community Players’ fall production of the musical “Baby.” Roles are available for 14-18 strong singer/actors ages 17 and older. Attend either the Aug. 20 or Aug. 21 session, preparing 16 bars of a song that showcases your voice as well as your ability to act through a song. An accompanist will be provided. Callbacks will be held by invitation on Aug. 23. Also, bring a recent picture and resume as well as a list of conflicts for the August thru October time period. Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon, 7 a.m. Aug. 25, Lake Norman YMCA, 21300 Davidson St., Cornelius. The Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon begins with a 750-meter swim in Lake Norman, followed by a 17-mile bike course through Davidson and northern Mecklenburg County and a five-kilometer run. Registration currently underway, with a 900-participant limit. Cost: $70 individual, $150 relay team before June 1; $75 individual, $160 relay team before Aug. 22; $80 individual, $170 relay team before Aug. 25. Additional $12 fee for each non-USAT registrant.
