Get outside this weekend – in the woods, on the water, at the parks

weekend calendar bug [1] Get in touch with nature this weekend through a variety of activities Saturday.  Learn how horses see the world, with a “World of Wonder” outing at the Triple Play Farm. Don’t forget the Davidson Farmer’s Market, which will host its Third Annual Salsa Showdown. Or head out to Lake Norman for the annual “Big Day at the Lake” activities to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Charlotte.  Kids can explore stones, bones and other fossils in the Diggin’ on Dinos  program, while Discovery Place gives you the chance to observe a shark dissection led by a Discovery Place educator.  If outdoor movies are more your style, Kannapolis’ Village Park is hosting a screening of “Footloose” on Friday night, and Cornelius is showing “The Adventures of Tintin” at Smithville Park on Saturday night.  Meanwhile, the one-woman play “The Edge of Our Bodies”  is running all weekend at the Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. THURSDAY, JULY 19

“Mud Fairies” Camp, 9 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Elements4Life, 16024 Davidson-Concord Road, Davidson – In this Woodland Discovery camp, kids ages 4 to 10 learn the characteristics of fairies, build mini habitats, make costumes and jewelry, go on hunts, have a tea party and play in the woods, and learn to care for the forest plants and animals. Camp fees of $125 per week are due at time of registration. Toddler story time, 11 a.m. Cornelius Public Library, 21105 Catawba Ave.  – At toddler story time (19-35 months), toddlers build language skills, participate in music and movement activities, and discover the fun of books. New CMS chief at chamber, 11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. NorthStone Country Club in Huntersville – The Lake Norman Chamber will host new Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Heath Morrison.

Ice Cream Social for Seniors, 1-3 p.m. North Mecklenburg Senior Center, 16601 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville – Enjoy ice cream and games in anticipation of the summer Olympics. Street safety and design booth, 8 a.m.-noon. Downtown Davidson, off Main Street next to Town Hall – Davidson Design for Life (DD4L) will be hosting a booth at the Davidson Farmer’s Market to distribute information on street safety and healthy street design. Davidson Farmer’s Market, 8 a.m.-noon, downtown Davidson, off Main Street next to Town Hall – The weekly Davidson Farmer’s Market. Local farmers and vendors selling meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items. Also this Saturday: the annual Salsa Showdown. The market runs every Saturday through November. Big Day at the Lake, 9 a.m. Various locations at Lake Norman – Big Day at the Lake for the benefit of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Charlotte.  Children and their boat hosts will meet at the boat host’s dock of choice and boat on Lake Norman. “World of Wonder” outing, 9:30-11 a.m. Triple Play Farm – Learn how horses see the world at a “World of Wonder” outing. We will talk about predator vs. prey, the five senses, anatomy/psychology of horses, and how to use your body language to communicate and build relationship with horses. Preregistration is required. Cornelius’ outdoor cinema series, 8:30 p.m., Smithville Park, 19710 S. Movies are shown on an inflatable “blimp screen,” and weather permitting, begin at dusk. Refreshments are available for purchase, and viewers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
