Concert on the Green: Big Band, ‘Crazy for You’ preview

[1]Lake Norman Big Band plays a Concert on the Green in Davidson Sunday.
The 20-piece Lake Norman Big Band plays this Sunday, June 17, in the next Davidson Concert on the Green on Davidson’s Town Green on Sunday, June 17th from 6-8pm as part of the Concerts on Green [2] series. The evening will include a preview of music from Davidson Community Players’ upcoming show “Crazy for You,” which opens next week.
Since its formation in 1998 and incorporation in 2007, the Lake Norman Big Band has performed at community events around Lake Norman, including outdoor concerts at Lowe’s YMCA, Race City Days Festival, local churches, the Town of Cornelius, and fundraisers. The group appears on the fourth Monday of every month at the Finish Line Restaurant in Mooresville.
Big band is a style of music that originated in the 1930s and 1940s. During that era the popular bands were conducted by such legends as Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman. Later, came the younger generation of stars like Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson. Big bands kept the country dancing and in recent years, have become very popular for many social events.
The Lake Norman Big Band incorporates musical styles from the genre’s different eras as well as modern songs by popular bands and artists including Chicago, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Carlos Santana, Norah Jones, Michael Buble and Pat Metheny.
‘CRAZY FOR YOU’ PREVIEW
In addition to the Lake Norman Big Band, concertgoers will also get a special treat: Davidson Community Players Lead Actors Kevin Roberge (Bella Zangler), Kristian Andrewson (Bobby Child) and Lexie Wolfe (Polly Baker) will sing three great Gershwin classics from their upcoming show “Crazy For You.”
The actors will sing three Gershwin classics: “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “You Can’t Take That Away From Me,” and “What Causes That.” “We like showcasing our summer musical productions at Concerts on the Green each year, and hope that everyone will make reservations to see “Crazy For You” June 21 through June 30,” said Melissa Ohlman-Roberge, who directs the show.
“Crazy For You” is a foot-stomping, tap-dancing, high-energy musical comedy that includes mistaken identities, fabulous dance numbers, and classic Gershwin music. The Wild West has never seemed so wild as tap-dancing cowboys and beautiful Follies girls. Info: www.davidsoncommunityplayers.org [3].
