weekend calendar bugA variety of fundraisers, the Davidson Community Players’ “Children of a Lesser God” and a big gymnastics meet at Hough High School  highlight the weekend’s activities throughout the area. And if you live or work in Cornelius, or you frequently travel along Catawba Avenue, the town’s major thoroughfare, you may be interested in the Transforming Exit 28 public work sessions going on Thursday through Saturday at Cornelius Town Hall.

The fundraising begins Thursday night, with Davidson College’s Warner Hall Eating House teaming up with Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson to hold “Coffee for a Cure,” with proceeds going to HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.  On Saturday, the Ada Jenkins Center holds its sixth-annual ICE Gala at Davidson College’s Vail Commons dining hall, and Lake Norman Kiwanis has a pancake breakfast and silent auction at Huntersville’s First Baptist Church.

The Davidson Community Players will hold its second weekend of performances of “Children of a Lesser God” at the Armour Street Theatre on Thursday through Sunday.

Davidson College’s men’s basketball team begins postseason play this week at the Southern Conference tournament. The Wildcats, who won the SoCon’s South Division title to get a first-round bye in the tournament, will play either Samford or Furman in a quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.

Meanwhile, Davidson’s women’s basketball team has the No. 1 seed in the Southern Conference women’s tournament.  — also got a first-round bye in the conference tournament, and will play either the College of Charleston or Wofford in a quarterfinal game at 12 p.m. Saturday at UNC-Asheville’s Kimmel Arena.

If you have an interest in gymnastics — and maybe want to catch a future Olympian perform — stop by Hough High School in Cornelius on Saturday or Sunday. The Everest Classic gymnastics meet is taking place in the school’s gymnasium, with more than 400 gymnasts from the region competing.
