weekend calendar bug [2]

It’s a weekend for fundraisers around the area communities with a 10K run-walk, a jazz and art festival and a banquet at Davidson College. Also ahead: the Celebrate Smithville festival in Cornelius, “Metamporphoses” and “Children of a Lesser God” on local stages, and Davidson Farmers Market. And there’s plenty of local music on the calendar as well.

The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce’s Business Build 10K Challenge Run-Walk will take place Saturday morning at the Bailey Middle School track in Cornelius, with proceeds going to the Our Towns Habitat for Humanity.

On Friday night, the jazz ensemble Night Shift will be the highlight act during the Spread The Love jazz and artists festival at the Homewood Suites of Davidson. Proceeds from that event will go to three local charities — the Community School of Davidson, the Davidson Lands Conservancy and the Ada Jenkins Center.

And on Saturday night, Davidson College’s Student Government Association will host its third-annual Dinner at Davidson in the Chambers Building’s Lilly Gallery. Funds from this event go to The Davidson Trust, which provides grants and other financial assistance to Davidson students.

In other events in the area this weekend:

The town of Cornelius will cap its Black History Month activities on Saturday afternoon at the Cornelius Town Hall with an event honoring Smithville, one of the area’s oldest communities.

For lovers of the stage, Davidson College’s Theatre Department will perform “Metamorphoses” on Thursday-Sunday at the Cunningham Theatre Center’s Barber Theatre, while the Davidson Community Players perform “Children of a Lesser God” on Thursday-Sunday at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.

The Davidson Farmer’s Market returns to downtown Davidson next to Town Hall on Saturday morning. Meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items will be available from local vendors.

And if you happen to be going to Charlotte on Saturday night, swing by the N.C. Music Factory/The Saloon to catch Davidson-based songwriter Rusty Knox. He’s one of 15 nominees for the 2012 Charlotte Music Awards’ Singer/Songwriter of the Year award, and will be performing that night during the CMA Showcase.
