Feeling in a charitable mood this weekend? There’s a full slate of fundraisers across the area – from the Davidson Housing Coalition’s 8th annual Souper Bowl to the Have a Heart Valentine’s Party at Cornelius Arts Center. In Mooresville, the Memory Lane Auto Museum hosts a benefit for early auto racing veterans in need. And United Family Services will benefit from the Art with Heat Gala Saturday at Founders Hall in Charlotte.
THE HEADLINES
Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse in downtown Davidson kicks off the fun when Georgia Kruger, executive director of the Ada Jenkins Center, is the guest bartender Thursday night, with all of her tips going to the regional community services center. She’s celebrating her return to work after a bout with Lyme Disease. On Friday, the Freckled Dog Pub upstairs at downtown Davidson’s Summit Coffee steps up to help the Access to Success (A2S) Foundation, which supports underprivileged children in Nigeria. Other restaurants also host fund-raising days to help A2S and Davidson College’s Kicks From Cats.
Most of the weekend’s fundraisers are Saturday. The Have A Heart Valentine’s Party at the Cornelius Arts Center will benefit the Buddy Kemp Caring House in Charlotte, the Legends Helping Legends 2012 at Mooresville’s Memory Lane Museum will benefit the Old Timers Racing Club, Davidson College will host the soup cook-off Souper Bowl VIII for the Davidson Housing Coalition, the Art With Heart Gala at Charlotte’s Founders Hall is for a new domestic violence shelter run by United Family Services, and the sixth-annual Greek Step Show at Davidson College will benefit the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center and the Ada Jenkins Center.
On the stage, two local theaters will wrap up performances this weekend — On The Verge, on Thursday-Saturday at the Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius; and A Thousand Cranes, on Friday and Saturday at the Armour Street Theatre in Davidson.
In sports, Davidson College’s men’s basketball team hosts Chattanooga in a Southern Conference game Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena.
And if you’re an old-time jazz buff, check out Charlotte pianist Ethan Uslan at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson on Sunday afternoon. He will perform music from the jazz age, then provide accompaniment to Buster Keaton’s 1924 silent film classic “Sherlock Jr.”
