Jazz, step show, theater and ‘Souper Bowl’ Saturday

By BILL KISER
DavidsonNews.netthis week bug

Davidson College’s Belk Family Performance Hall will groove to the sounds of jazz when Jeremy Davis and the Fabulous Equinox Jazz Orchestra cuts loose with its high-energy stage show on Monday night. The performance by the Equinox Jazz Orchestra highlights a week’s worth of activities and events in Davidson and the surrounding communities.  On stage, the Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius wraps up its run of the comedy “On The Verge” this week with shows Thursday through Saturday, and an ensemble from the Connie Company — the Davidson Community Players’ youth company — puts on a free performance of “A Thousand Cranes” on Friday and Saturday.

Feeling in a charitable mood? Then check out the Legends Helping Legends 2012 at the Memory Lane Museum in Mooresville on Saturday, which will give part of its proceeds to the Old Timers Racing Club, a group that helps early racing veterans in need. And if you’re a little hungry, wander over to the Lilly Family Gallery at Davidson College, where Souper Bowl VIII — a soup cook-off between area restaurants — will raise funds for the Davidson Housing Coalition on Saturday. Stick around campus, because Saturday night the sixth-annual Apocalypse Greek Step Show will take place at the Duke Family Performance Hall among fraternities and sororties from across North and South Carolina, with proceeds benefiting the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center and the Ada Jenkins Center.

And with “The Artist” drawing rave reviews and reviving interest in silent movies, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson will hold a showing of Buster Keaton’s 1924 silent classic “Sherlock Jr.,” with Charlotte pianist Ethan Uslan providing accompaniment.

These events — and more below — are in our day-by-day calendar at right. Also, at right on this page, see our movie show times listings for Our Town Cinemas.
