Area stages are where it’s happening this weekend, with a healthy list of theatrical and musical performances to choose from.   The Connie Company — the youth performance group of the Davidson Community Players — and the Davidson College Theatre Department offer “Sleeping Beauty” in seven shows on Friday-Sunday at the Cunningham Theatre Center’s Barber Theatre. Meanwwhile, Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius will open its run of the comedy “On The Verge” with shows Thursday through Sunday.  On Sunday, award-winning cellist Anna Wittstruck — the granddaughter of Davidson residents Bill and Mary Vinson — performs works by Beethoven, Mozart and Shostakovich in the Sloan Music Center’s Tyler-Tallman Hall at Davidson College.

dragonAnd on Saturday, ring in the Lunar New Year  – the Year of the Dragon – with a party and fireworks on the atrium of Davidson College’s Alvarez College Union.  There’s also live music scheduled later this week at Summit Coffee and the Brickhouse Tavern, both in downtown Davidson.

Away from the stage, the Davidson Farmer’s Market will feature local farmers and vendors on Saturday morning in downtown Davidson next to the Davidson Town Hall.  The Greater Charlotte Home and Landscape Show begins its three-day run Friday at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord. Among the experts on hand will be Roger Hazard, host of “Sell This House” and “Sell This House: Extreme” on the A&E Network.

Workshops by Shawn Bigby of New Life Fellowship Center in Charlotte will be held Jan. 25-26, and Pastor Johnny Brown of Mills Chapel Holiness Church in Gastonia will host the Praise Explosion on Jan. 27. Comedy by Hollywood writer Eric Overmyer follows three Victorian woman as they set out to explore Africa, Himalaya and Terra Incognita. Greater Charlotte Home and Landscape Show, 2-7 p.m. Jan. 27, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 28 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 29, Cabarrus Arena and Events Center, 4751 N.C. 49, Concord. Learn about new ideas for your home and landscape. Experts will showcase the latest in decorating, remodeling, landscaping, and renovating resources; and see the newest kitchen and bath innovations. Roger Hazard, host of “Sell This House” and “Sell This House: Extreme” On the A&E Network, will share his expertise with seminars at the show. Plenty of food, wine and beer tastings, a kid zone, pottery demonstrations, plant sale, and birds of prey exhibit are also planned. The Lake Norman Chamber’s monthly “Friday Focus” meeting will examine the proposed Red Line Rail Project. Consultants from the N.C. Department of Tranportation, the Lake Norman Regional Transportation Committee and the Cornelius Red Line Task Force will discuss the project. The meeting is free and open to the public. Cellist Anna Wittstruck, 3 p.m., Tyler-Tallman Hall, Sloan Music Center, Davidson College, Davidson. Cellist Anna Wittstruck grew up in Asheville and is completing a Ph.D. in musicology at Stanford University. Ms. Wittstruck — whose grandparents, Bill and Mary Vinson, live in Davidson — will perform works by Beethoven, Mozart and Shostakovich For more information on Wittstruck, check out our preview story [22]. She has appeared as a soloist with the Charlotte and Hendersonville Symphonies, and this fall she is soloing with the Stanford Philharmonia as a winner of the 2011 Stanford Symphony Concerto Competition. She has played four seasons as the youngest contracted member of the Asheville Symphony and has participated in music festivals at the Pierre Monteux School of Conducting, Round Top Festival, the National Symphony Orchestra/Kennedy Center Institute, and Tanglewood. Her program will include works by Beethoven, Poulenc and Shostakovich.
