Feb. events: lectures, theater, Apocalypse Step Show

Davidson Events bugDavidson College will host lectures on ethics, foreign policy and food, the college’s Gamut Dance Company will perform two shows and productions of “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “Metamorphoses” will appear on the Duke Family Performance Hall stage in the coming weeks. Davidson’s February public events calendar also includes the 6th Annual Apocalypse Greek Step Show, a concert by fiddler Jon Singleton and a dedication of the solar panels installed on the Baker Sports Complex roof. Here’s the calendar:

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 1

Ethics Lecture – Davidson College invites the public on Wednesday evening, February 1, to a talk by alumnus Shannon Walters McFayden ’82. McFayden, a former executive vice president of the Wachovia Corporation, will speak on “Business Ethics, Corporate Culture and the Influence of Leaders” beginning at 7 p.m. in the Alvarez College Union Smith 900 Room. THURSDAY, FEB. 2

Latin American Studies – Davidson College invites the public on Thursday evening, February 2, to a discussion of U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America. Former U.S. Ambassador Patrick Duddy and Davidson Associate Professor of PoliticalScience Russell Crandall will present “From Caracas to Washington with Love.” Duddy served as U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela from 2007-2010, and Crandall served in the National Security Council as the Principal Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs in 2009, and Director in the U.S. Department of Andean Affairs in 2010-2011. Musical Interludes – Davidson College invites the public to a mid-day fiddle concert on Friday, February 3, by the multitalented musician Jon Singleton, an adjunct instructor at Davidson [2]. SATURDAY, FEB. 4

Apocalypse Greek Step Show- 8 p.m., Duke Family Performance Hall. – Davidson College will host the sixth-annual Apocalypse Greek Step Show, this year themed “Revelations of the Divine.” Artist Dennis Shaheed Swagnificent Latimer will host the show, which will features fraternities and sororities from colleges in North and South Carolina. The winning fraternity and sorority each receive $1,000. Proceeds from the show benefit the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center and the Ada Jenkins Center, in Davidson. Religion Lecture – Davidson College invites the public to its annual Staley Lecture on Tuesday evening, Feb. 7. Renowned author Barbara Brown Taylor will speak about “Learning to Walk in the Dark: The Ancient Way of Unknowing.” She will discuss how darkness has gotten a bad name among religious people, when it is in fact where God does some of God‘s best work. Taylor teaches religion at Piedmont College in Georgia, and was voted Georgia “Author of the Year” in 2006. She is an author of many articles and twelve books on Christian spirituality. Holocaust Studies Lecture – Davidson College invites the public to a Holocaust studies lecture on Tuesday evening, February 7, by Eric Steinhart, a scholar at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Steinhart will discuss “Soviet Collaborators and the Holocaust in Ukraine” beginning at 7:30 in Hance Auditorium of Chambers Building. There is no charge to attend. Steinhart has already authored a number of articles on the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. His recent work, “Policing the Boundaries of ‘Germandom’ in the East: SS Ethnic German Policy and Odessa’s ‘Volksdeutsche,’ 1941-1944,” appeared last year in the journal “Central European History.” For more information call 704-894-2284.

Dining with TV host Joanne Weir – Davidson College invites the public on Wednesday, February 8, to a dining event with noted public television chef Joanne Weir. Weir, host of the public television series, “Joanne Weir’s Cooking Class” and a new series titled “Joanne Weir’s Cooking Confidence,” will meet fans, talk about cuisine, and offer a Mediterranean luncheon she has inspired. Media Affairs Lecture – Davidson College invites the public to a talk about “The Media and International Relations” on Wednesday evening, February 8, by U.S. Navy Admiral William J. Fallon (retired). Fallon will speak about how social media outlets are now connecting not only people with other people, but governments to governments. Fallon spent 41 years in the Navy, and currently serves as chair of the board of CounterTack Inc., a cyber security firm. Theatre Lecture on ‘Metamorphoses’ – Davidson College invites the public on Thursday evening, February 9, to a talk by Harvard University Professor of Classics Richard Tarrant. Tarrant will discuss “Permanence and Change in ‘Metamorphoses.’” The talk anticipates the Theatre Department’s late February production of the modern adaptation of the play ‘Metamorphoses’ by American playwright Mary Zimmerman. Communication Studies – Davidson College invites the public to a talk on Tuesday, February 21, by noted University of Pennsylvania political scientist Kathleen Hall Jamieson [7]. Jamieson will present Davidson’s annual McGaw Lecture on the topic “How Today’s Consulting Tactics Could Have Unseated Lincoln.” Jamieson will explore whether Abraham Lincoln’s 1864 bid for re-election could have failed had he faced the attack tactics of contemporary political campaigns. Jamieson is the author or co-author of 15 books, including the latest she co-authored titled “The Obama Victory: How Media, Money, and Messages Shaped the 2008 Election.” There is no charge to attend the lecture, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall. Theater: “Metamorphoses” –  Davidson College Theatre Department invites the public to a stage presentation of Mary Zimmerman’s interpretation of “Metamorphoses.” The play, originally written by the Roman poet Ovid, is an ironic and moving look at human relationships. Zimmerman’s story ultimately brings audience members to a closer understanding of love,lust and loss. General admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors 60 and over, and $4 for students. All performances are in The Barber Theatre of Cunningham Theatre Center. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. February 22 to 25, with a 2 p.m. matinee on February 26.
