Local musicians take the spotlight this weekend at clubs around the area. On Thursday night, Davidson’s Summit Coffee will hold its Songwriters Showcase, with performances by Jackie Moseley, Summit’s 2011 Songwriter of the Year winner, and Cambridge, Mass., folk singer Matthew Alexander. And on Saturday night, The Birdsnest in Davidson will hold its After Holiday Jam. The second-annual event will feature music by Billy Jones and Mason Bissett.
Summit Coffee and the Brickhouse Tavern in Davidson will also have their stages open to area musicians on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
On Friday night, the Charles Mack Citizen Center will host the first of Mooresville’s Movies on Main series, showing “Dolphin Tale.”
Saturday, the Lake Norman YMCA in Cornelius will hold an open house for the Y’s newly renovated fitness center.
Davidson College’s men’s basketball team has two games this week at Belk Arena, hosting the College of Charleston on Thursday night and The Citadel on Saturday. The Wildcats’ women’s basketball team also has a home game Saturday afternoon, hosting Samford.
In the giving mood? Both St. Therese’s Catholic Church in Mooresville and the Regal Theater Birkdale in Huntersville are holding blood drives on Saturday.
And on Saturday and Sunday, the VisitLakeNorman.org Soccer Series will be going on all day at various area parks. The North Mecklenburg Soccer Club hosts the first of three weekends of events in the series, with youth soccer teams from around the southeastern United States playing a series of “friendlies.”
