Renaissance festival fun [1]

Fun in costume at the Renaissance Festival, which opens this weekend.

Annual festival returns this weekend, and runs through the end of November

When the Carolina Renaissance Festival opened for the first time in 1994, it had just six acres of village attractions. Now, the event has grown into one of the largest renaissance-themed events in the country as well as one of the largest tourist attractions in the Carolinas.

Juggling [2]

Juggling is among the entertainments.

Operating seven consecutive Saturdays and Sundays in October and November, the tree-lined 22-acre site hosts the story-book renaissance village of Fairhaven, with charming cottages, castles, kitchens and pubs. There villagers, artists, craftspeople, musicians, performance troupes and food vendors gather in a marketplace festival atmosphere to celebrate the arrival of their visiting King and Queen.

The festival has attractions for all age groups, including 11 stages with continuous music, dance, comedy shows, and circus entertainments – from sword swallowing to one-of-a-kind  old world musical instruments. Meanwhile, throughout the village, a costumed cast of 300 medieval commoners, knights, and royalty celebrates a 16th century day of play.

New this year will be Maidens IV, an all-sister band playing Celtic & Roots music, mixed with hints of Pop, World, and Gypsy Jazz. There’s also a Hanseatic League Living History Encampment, a re-creation of an economic alliance of renaissance trading cities and merchant guilds of Northern Europe. Learn about merchant life and trades of the time-period as re-enactors demonstrate various crafts throughout the day.

Also on the grounds: an exhibition of falconry and birds of prey, an authentic re-creation of a jousting tournament, and plenty of rides and games for kids.
