this week logo [2]Ever seen “Macbeth”? The Connie Company – Davidson Community Players’ youth program – will put its own twist on Shakespeare’s classic tragedy this week in five performances over three days beginning Friday night. Looking for something more thought-provoking? Holocaust survivor Susan Cernyak-Spatz of Charlotte will talk about her suffering at the hands of the Nazi regime on Monday afternoon at Davidson College. And author Sebastian Junger, whose book “The Perfect Storm” was made into a major motion picture, will deliver a lecture — also at Davidson College — on Tuesday night.

On the music scene, Davidson College Presbyterian Church will open the sixth season of its Organ at Davidson series on Tuesday night with a performance by international concert organist Gail Archer; Davidson’s Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse will host mandolinist Michael Orlando, guitarist Billy Jones and banjo player Jim Ashton on Wednesday night. On Sunday, the selections are varied — St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson will hold “BachFest IV,” featuring concertos by Bach, Vivaldo and Corelli; Davidson College will host a concert of Indian music by the ensemble Vibrations, and Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius will host a performance by The Toneblazers.

On Thursday night, downtown Davidson shops La De Daa’s, Monkee’s on Main and the Village Store will remain open for Ladies Night. Shops are accepting donations for Acres of Hope in Uganda.

And for those more athletically-inclined, Davidson College’s volleyball team opens its Southern Conference schedule at home against Furman on Thursday night, Hough High’s football team hosts Hopewell on Friday night, and the Wildcats’ football team hosts Johnson C. Smith on Saturday night.
