Run for Green, ‘Wake the Lake,’ Concert on the Green

Davidson Lands Conservancy’s Run for Green and Green Day Festival will be Saturday morning in downtown Davidson. Are you running? Meanwhile, have you seen Davidson Community Players’ production of “The Guys” yet? weekend calendar bugAnne Nelson’s play about healing after 9/11 in New York City concludes its run this weekend at Armour Street Theatre.

Feeling more like catching some good local music? Davidson’s Summit Coffee will hold its Songwriters Showcase Thursday night, while the Mooresville law firm of Homesley and Wingo will host the Blues and Burritos benefit Saturday evening. Also Saturday, Davidson Local plays a benefit for DavidsonNews.net and CorneliusNews.net at Summit. And the Davidson Symphony and Jazz Ensemble will perform in the final installment of the Davidson Concerts on the Green Sunday.

On the sports scene, Davidson College’s football team has the week off, the Wildcats’ volleyball team hosts the three-day Wildcat Classic tournament Friday through Sunday at Belk Arena. Hough High’s football team is on the road at Vance High School on Friday night, and Davidson College’s women’s soccer team hosts local rival UNC Charlotte Sunday night.

For those wanting to spend a day catching some rays on Lake Norman, do so while watching the annual Wake the Lake wakeboarding tournament at Vinnie’s Raw Bar and Restaurant in Mooresville. Some of the region’s top wakeboarders and wakeskaters will compete for cash and prizes Saturday. This weekend also brings the 3rd annual Know Your Farms Charlotte Area Farm Tour.

The WBFL’s North Carolina division will hold its fifth and final event of the season, a two-day “super tournament” that pays the winner of the angler and co-angler divisions $11,000 and $4,500, respectively. Weigh-in will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Tamrac Marina and Campground, 9120 Bringle Ferry Rd., Salisbury, and at 4 p.m. Sunday at WalMart, 323 S. Arlington St., Salisbury. Greater Charlotte Heart Walk, 7:30 a.m., intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets, downtown Charlotte. The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s largest fundraising event in the Charlotte metro area, attracting 11,000-plus participants and raising $1.5 million to fight heart disease and stroke.
