Despite an ominous weather forecast, about 1800 people turned out to Bailey Road Park Saturday night for the annual “Symphony in the Park.” Part of the Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture department’s ‘Concerts in the Park’ summer series, the event included games and face painting starting around 6 p.m., pre-show music by the Bam Jazz Trio, and music by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra starting at 8:15 p.m.
Conducted by Jacomo Rafael Bairos, the orchestra only played for about 20 minutes before a storm rolled in and people had to pack up and head back to their cars.
WCNC Channel 36 meteorologist Brad Panovich was on site, at 11536 Bailey Road in Cornelius, monitoring the storm’s progress. Around 8:35 p.m., he alerted PARC officials that the storm was about 15 minutes away, allowing enough time to get everyone packed up and safely evacuated.
