Reunions, ‘Grave Comedies,’ jazz on the green

It’s reunion weekend at Davidson College, and the area is host to a pair of Saturday fund-raisers – the Loopy for a Cause 24-hour run for Batten’s Disease research, on the Davidson Village Green, and the Collier Lilly Ride 4 Life at Davidson College, to raise money and awareness for organ donation.  A new play festival opens this weekend at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, featuring a collection of short plays called “Grave Comedies.” Rural Hill will be celebrating and re-enacting the wedding of the historic site’s founders on Saturday, and there’s a jazz Concert on the Green on Sunday.

THURSDAY, JUNE 2

Davidson College Reunion Weekend, Davidson College Campus, Davidson – A celebration for the classes falling on every 5- and 10-year anniversary from the 5th to the 50th. There will be open houses, back-to-school classes and plenty of opportunities for reconnecting with former classmates. June 2-5. For the event schedule, visit Davidson College’s website. RockBus Concert: Kenny Chesney, 5 p.m., Prohibition, 200 N. Tryon, Charlotte – Transportation to and from Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, a few cold ones on the way to Verizon, and drink specials at starting bar before and after the show. Check-in is from 5:00-5:45 at Prohibition and the bus pulls out at 6 p.m. sharp. Cost is $20 for RockBus only or $60 for RockBus and concert ticket.

Friday Friends – on Thursday, 5:45-7:45 p.m., Levine Museum of the New South, 200 E. 7th St., Charlotte – Mecklenburg Ministries and Crossroads Charlotte invite you to the 4th annual Friday Friends networking event to engage with others, expand your circle of friends, and experience the exhibit- “Courage: The Carolina Story that Changed America.” Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. Parenting Session, 6-8 p.m., Gethsemane Baptist Church, 565 Jetton St., Davidson – Hosted by the Gethsemane Women of Faith ministry for pregnant women or new mothers with children 2 years old or younger. Collier Lilly Ride 4 Life, 7 a.m., McMillan Building, Davidson College, Davidson – A recreational bike ride to honor the life of Collier Cobb Lilly and raise awareness and money for organ sharing. A 100K (62 miles), 50K (31 miles) and 15K (10 miles) route will be offered. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the ride starts at 8 a.m. Registration is $25 online and $30 on the day of the ride. Concert on the Green, 6-8 p.m., Davidson Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road in front of Davidson library – Featuring music by the Blue Chip Jazz Band. The event comes as Davidson Community Players prepare to open their production of “Ragtime.” Several actors will be in costume to sing numbers from “Ragtime” during the band’s first break at 6:45 p.m. Free.
