A four-day Collectibles and Antiques show kicks off Thursday at the Metrolina Expo in north Charlotte, where you can find anything from home decor items to fresh produce. Saturday is packed with options, from the Charlotte Asian Festival and Dragon Boat races on Lake Norman to a Charity Ride & Poker Run for the Cornelius Veterans Monument to the Lake Norman Spring Music Festival at Kenton Place. Also Saturday, the Davidson Farmer’s Market is open, and it’s Davidson Town Day, including a 5k run, community service activities and a library book sale.

THURSDAY, MAY 5

Davidson College emergency alert test, 11:15 a.m. – Davidson College will test its emergency alert system, which include a siren and loudspeakers. Davidson public safety officials said that while most of the testing will be internal to the college, town residents may hear the activation of our audible siren. This is just a routine test and no emergency exists.
Everybody Zumba, noon-2 p.m., Union Atrium, Davidson College, Davidson – The Upsilon Mu Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority invites you to dance the stress away with two free Zumba Sessions. Charlotte Writer’s Club North, 7 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church, 100 N. Main St., Davidson – Malcolm Campbell will be speaking at the May meeting. He is the author of two adventure travel guidebooks, editor of the golf instructional book Rock Solid Golf, and founder of the independent publishing house, Walkabout Press. SATURDAY, MAY 7
Boy Scout Encampment, McGuire Nuclear Station, 12700 Hagers Ferry Road, Huntersville – Scouts will wake up to freshly-made pancakes and sausages served by a local troop. After the flag ceremony, the scouts will spend the day attending a variety of interactive classes, which include aviation, finger printing, nuclear science, communications, first aid and many other subjects. Charity Ride & Poker Run, 8 a.m., Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave., Cornelius – Participants visit 5 to 7 stops drawing a card at each stop. The event has a time limit, but the object is to draw the best hand, not the best time. Entry fee is $20 a bike/car (includes driver); $10 per additional passenger; $10 per additional hand. AIDS Walk Charlotte, 8 a.m., Gateway Village Atrium, 800 W. Trade St., Charlotte – A two mile walk through historic Fourth Ward. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. All funds raised during this event stay in the Charlotte area and benefits RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network). The kids can enjoy an expanded “Kids Zone.” Several Charlotte Mecklenburg schools are bringing artwork done by the students and a high school band is scheduled to perform. Family Day at the Bechtler, noon-4:30 p.m., Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, 420 South Tryon St., Charlotte – Family-friendly art projects take place in and around the museum. In addition to making art, kids can also view art in the park and participate in a scavenger hunt involving the five large-scale sculptures installed in The Green.
