Auditions this week for ‘Moon Over Buffalo’

[1]Davidson Community Players will hold auditions Monday and Tuesday night, April 11-12, for its July production of Ken Ludwig’s comedy “Moon Over Buffalo.” Actors and actresses over 18 are sought for eight roles in this raucous farce, about a dysfunctional theater troupe performing at the Erlander Theatre in Buffalo, New York, in 1953.
The auditions run 7-9 p.m. at Armour Street Theatre, 307 Armour St., Davidson.
Charlotte producer, direcor and actress Anne Lambert will direct “Moon Over Buffalo. The production will be in rehearsal beginning in May and will run eight performances July 21-23 at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall.
This week’s auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. A prepared monologue may be presented, but is not required. Auditionees should plan to arrive no later than 8 p.m. and only need to attend one session. Bring a resume or list of theatre experience, a recent picture and a list of conflicts for May through July.
The playwright, Mr. Ludwig, also wrote “Lend Me a Tenor,” which Davidson Community Players produced in July 2008.
In this story, the actors can barely tolerate each other and mishaps and confusions arise for the company when famed film director Frank Capra calls to say he is attending a performance to possibly cast the two leading actors, Charlotte and George Hay, in a movie. Their temperamental daughter Rosalind splits time between fiancé Howard and ex-fiancé Paul, who works as the company’s stage manager.
Charlotte’s nearly-deaf mother, Ethel, and Richard, a would-be suitor for Charlotte, make their contributions to the mayhem as Eileen, a young actress in the company, reveals a secret that turns everything upside down. The hopeful actors sprint through the tangle of confusion to produce a woefully misbegotten mixture of two different plays, and in the play’s climactic scene, manage to set everything right by still more series of coincidences and mishaps.
