Area YMCAs have extended their free open houses originally scheduled Tuesday to last through Friday, Jan. 14. Thursday is the first day of the “Financial Peace University” program at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, and there’s a lecture on lake-friendly landscaping by landscape designer Jan Enright in Mooresville. On Thursday night photographer Mitch Epstein and author Susan Bell will give a talk at Davidson College Visual Arts Center about their project that evaluates people’s relationships with energy. The Davidson library branch has toddler and preschool storytimes on Friday and Paws to Read on Saturday and there’s basketball Friday through Sunday.

YMCA Free Open House, The YMCA of Greater Charlotte is adopting a new logo and wants the community to help celebrate. All 18 branches will be open to everyone in the community for free through Friday, Jan. 14. The open house was extended to offer neighbors without power a place to get warm, shower and gather. Middle School IB open house, 10 a.m. – Davidson IB Middle School, 251 South St. – Tours of the International Baccalaureate middle school program (grades 6-8) for prospective students and parents. Program will be located at Alexander Middle School in Huntersville for 2011-12. Applications for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools magnet-school lottery will be accepted Jan. 7-Feb. 7.
