There’s a good mixture of events this week that includes music, sports, lectures, and more. But many of Monday’s events have been postponed because of snow. Check our cancellations list on the front page for the latest info. Among this week’s cultural events is an artist lecture on Thursday by photographer Mitch Epstein and author Susan Bell, who will speak about their Internet and public art project whatisamericanpower.com. There’s a program at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church on Sunday that explores poetic images in faith.
Meetings this week include a Davidson town board meeting on Tuesday and a Lake Norman Transportation Commission meeting on Wednesday. The North Mecklenburg Republic Women’s meeting has been cancelled due to snow. The week closes with men’s and women’s basketball. The men play Furman on Wednesday and Wofford on Saturday. The women play Chattanooga on Friday and Samford on Sunday.

MONDAY, JAN. 10
Blood Drive, 1:30-6:30 p.m., Fellowship Hall of Davidson United Methodist Church, 233 S. Main St. This event postponed by snow. The church’s next blood drive will be Monday, March 14. Property Tax Meeting, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave – Mecklenburg County Commissioner Karen Bentley has invited Garrett Alexander, Mecklenburg County Tax Assessor, to come and make a presentation to all interested citizens in District 1 about the upcoming property tax revaluations. There will be an opportunity for questions. Open to the public. The meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Race to Nowhere, 7-9 p.m., Community School of Davidson, 565 Griffith St – The documentary, “Race to Nowhere,” will be shown on Jan. 10 & Jan. 11. It explores the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that is creating unprepared and uninspired students. There will be a discussion led by a panel of experts directly following the film. Tickets are free, but a suggested donation of $10 per person is welcome. Reserve tickets for Monday, Jan. 10 here. YMCA Free Open House, The YMCA of Greater Charlotte is adopting a new logo and wants the community to help celebrate. All 18 branches will be open to everyone in the community for free through Friday, Jan. 14. The open house was extended to offer neighbors without power a place to get warm, shower and gather. North Mecklenburg Republican Women, The January 11th dinner meeting has been cancelled due to weather conditions. The event with Pat McCrory will be rescheduled.
Tuesday’s Organ at Davidson concert featuring Thomas Warburton has been canceled due to bad weather. It has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at DCPC.

Nuclear Siren Test, 11: 50 a.m. – The McGuire Nuclear Station will perform its emergency siren test. Hearing the siren does not mean to evacuate. The siren is a signal for residents to tune into a radio or TV station that would carry an emergency alerting message.
