This Saturday, Oct. 1, Summit Coffee and The Birdsnest music studio will host an 11-hour benefit concert for the Davidson Public Library’s “Got Brick?” campaign on the back porch at the coffee shop, 128 S. Main St. Also downtown Saturday is the Davidson Housing Coalition’s Festival for Hope and Housing, and Taste of Home food fest on the Village Green. MUSICIANS PLAY FOR THE LIBRARY
Ten different live musical acts will perform Saturday, Oct. 1, from noon to 11 p.m. at Summit Coffee. In exchange for the free music, Summit will be soliciting donations for the library campaign. And the shop will donate 10 percent of its sales to the campaign. Also, The Birdsnest, a new music studio at 102 N. Main St., will host a “Songwriter’s Showcase” from 4:30 – 7 p.m.
“The Davidson Public Library is an institution built around serving the community and building a sense of community,” Summit owner Tim Helfrich said in a press release.
“It is only appropriate that we pull together as a community to celebrate the library and to join our efforts in helping preserve it.” All musicians for the day will be donating their efforts to the cause, and several musicians have donated CDs to be sold in support of the campaign.
Performers include: Fountain Penn, Cynergy, Angelo Melendez, Rick Spreitzer, Kevin Edwards, Davidson Local, The Rusty Knox Band, Jon Springfield, and Billy Jones and the Pocket.
Billy Jones and the Pocket will follow the Rusty Knox Band (7:30 – 8:45) to close the show with a two-hour set from 9-11. The Pocket is fronted by Birdsnest owner Billy Jones and features Mr. Helfrich on the drums. Typically a 3-piece band, the Pocket will grow to include more than six members in the finale set. Guests will include Mason Bissett on the bass guitar, Russell Dye on lead guitar, Joe Diaco on the keyboards, and Michale Cavell on the saxophone.
The music will be free all day at both Summit Coffee and The Birdsnest, although donations are encouraged. Summit Coffee will also donate 10 percent of all sales on Saturday. And the shop plans to match all donations up to $500 made during the Pocket’s set.
