Library benefits, meetings, Festival for Hope & Housing

this week buttonOur Davidson community calendar this week swings from from public meetings at Town Hall and lectures and film screenings to sporting events and concerts. We’ve got two events tied to the Davidson Library Task force’s fund-raising campaign: an all-day 15th anniversary celebration at public library branch Wednesday and an all-day concert by local musicians Saturday at Summit Coffee. The annual Davidson United Methodist Church book sale begins a two-weekend run on Friday. Saturday brings the Festival for Hope and Housing, a fund-raising bike ride and Taste of Home festival for the Davidson Housing Coalition.

MONDAY, SEPT. 27

Tony Abbott on “A Walk in the Woods,” 3-4 p.m., The Pines, 400 Avinger Lane – Tony Abbot lectures on A Walk in the Woods, this year’s ReadDavidson townwide reading book. For more about ReadDavidson, see our ReadDavidson preview from Aug. 18 [1].

Davidson Planning Board meeting, 7 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Davidson Planning Board monthly meeting. Agenda includes a public comment period, discussion of a conditional rezoning request by Rushco Davidson Market for signage, and the annual report to the Town Board. The board also will discuss amendments to its rules of procedure. Full agenda on the town website. [2]

Info session for new Catholic high school, 7 p.m., St. Therese Catholic Church, Brawley School Road, Mooresville – Information session for Christ the King High School, a new Catholic high school planned to open in August 2011 on Statesville Road in Huntersville. TUESDAY, SEPT. 28

Davidson Town Board work session, 6 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Davidson town board monthly work session with an agenda that includes a conditional zoning request by Rushco Davidson Market (for signs that don’t meet the town ordinance). Also on the schedule: a presentation by town economic development manager Kris Krider and Downtown Director Sandy Lemons on a proposed downtown/economic development work plan.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education, 1 p.m., Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center, Room 267, Charlotte – Board work session on the ongoing “Comprehensive Review.” The board is expected to continue its look at schools scheduled for changes or closures. 4:30 p.m., Closed session. 6 p.m., school board regular meeting, also Room 267. Agenda for the evening meeting.

Film: “A Walk to Beautiful”, 7 p.m., Davidson College Alvarez College Union, 900 Room – The Dean Rusk international studies program hosts a screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary “A Walk to Beautiful,” directed and produced by Davidson graduate Mary Olive Smith ’88. It’s the story of five Ethiopian women suffering from obstetric fistula, a condition that affects thousands of women, often resulting in serious physical ailments and alienation from their community. The film chronicles these women’s journey to a nearby hospital for treatment they hope will help them regain their independence. Q&A with Mary Olive Smith to follow the screening. Free. Davidson library anniversary celebration, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Davidson public library branch, on the Village Green – Davidson’s Library Task Force will hold a 15th anniversary celebration at the branch on the Village Green. Music, exhibits of children’s artwork and the library’s history, and an evening reception are planned at the branch. The event will help raise money for the task force’s $175,000 fund-raising campaign. 10 a.m., open house beings, 11:15 Spanish for preschoolers program, 4-5 p.m., Chatroom book discussion for teens, 5:15 p.m. music by North Meck Moravian Band, 6 p.m. Reception. Lecture: Creating a Museum, 4 p.m., Davidson College Alvarez College Union, 900 Room – Davidson Memory Group and Teaching Discussion Group present Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, speaking on “A Call to Remember: The Creation of the National Museum.” The lecture is for a general audience and is open to the public. College Symphony Concert for a Cause, 7:30 p.m., Duke Family Performance Hall, Knobloch Campus Center, Davidson College – The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra opens its season of Concerts for a Cause with pianist Ruskin Cooper performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The concert is free and open to the public. Details on the college website [9] The concert will benefit the mental health-awareness programs of Active Minds.

Ethical Dilemmas in Election Campaigns, 7 p.m., Davidson College Alvarez College Union 900 Room – Political discuss of “Ethical Dilemmas in Election Campaigns,” with lawyer and Democratic campaign consultant Mac McCorkle and Davidson political science Profs. Rural Hill Amazing Maize Maze, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., STARTING TONIGHT night maze at 6:30 p.m., Rural Hill farm, 4431 Neck Road, off Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville – Rural Hill presents the annual Amazing Maize Maze, a 7-acre labyrinth with 2 1/2 miles of pathways cut into a cornfield. This year’s theme is the Conestoga Wagon that brought Major John Davidson from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in the 18th century. Today is the first Friday Night Flashlight Maze. Bring a flashlight at have fun. Admission $10 ages 13+ and $7 for ages 5-12. Children ages 4 and under free. Details: www.ruralhill.net [10]

SATURDAY, OCT. 2

Festival for Hope & Housing, 8 a.m., Davidson United Methodist Church, 233 S. Main St. – The Davidson Housing Coalition’s Ride for Hope and Housing this year is the Festival for Hope and Housing. It includes 100K, 50K, and 25K bike rides and a 5K Family Fun Ride or Stride. After the rides, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the Village Green, the Taste of Home festival will have food from Davidson-based eateries, sponsors’ tables, and live music. Methodist book sale, 8-noon, Davidson United Methodist Church, 233 S. Main St. – The church’s annual book sale runs Oct. 1-3 and 8-10 at the Dale House, adjacent to the church’s parking lot. Friday hours are 3-7 p.m.; Saturday from 8-noon, and Sunday from 9-1. Books and media of all varieties are available and well displayed according to type. All proceeds support missions for women and children.

Summit Coffee all-day concert for the library ‘Got Brick?’ campaign, Noon to 11 p.m., Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main St. – Summit Coffee and The Birdsnest music studio will co-host an all day concert featuring 10 live musical acts to benefit the Davidson Library Task Force’s $175,000 fund-raising campaign to keep the local library branch open amid financial troubles in the public library system. Performers include: Fountain Penn, Cynergy, Angelo Melendez, Rick Spreitzer, Kevin Edwards, Davidson Local, The Rusty Knox Band, Jon Springfield, and Billy Jones and the Pocket. Billy Jones and the Pocket will follow the Rusty Knox Band (7:30 – 8:45) to close the show with a two-hour set from 9-11. Summit will donate 10 percent of the day’s sales, and will match all donations up to $500 during the Pocket’s set. Info: 704-895-9090

Chamber music concert, 3 p.m., Tyler-Tallman Hall, Davidson College – Alan Black, principal cellist for the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, along with violinist Rosemary Furniss and pianist Dana Protopopescu, will open the Concert Series season with a program of chamber music by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Brahms. General admission is $12; Faculty/Staff/Senior Citizens: $8; $Youth 18 and under: $5; Davidson Students: free with ID.

ReadDavidson lecture on travel writing, 4 p.m., Rare Book Room, E.H. Little Library, Davidson College – Davidson College archivist Jan Blodgett will lecture on travel narratives. It’s part of this year’s ReadDavidson reading series of events surrounding the townwide read, “A Walk in the Woods,” by Bill Bryson.
