Robert Parris leads off 5th Organ at Davidson series

Robert Parris, the Charles B. Thompson Professor of Organ and University Organist at Mercer University in Atlanta, opens the fifth season of Organ at Davidson with the world premiere of his most recent sonata, composed just this summer. The performance is Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, Main Street and Concord Road.
Also on his program is a newly discovered choral prelude by German Baroque composer Dietrich Buxtehude, and works of Franck, Bach, Reger and Dupré.
The event is free, with donations toward future programs appreciated, and followed by a reception arranged by Friends of the Organ.
Long established on the roster of concert organists, Robert Parris has recorded repertoire by Mozart and Reger and music of Sowerby in the album “Jubilee”. His most recent recording included music of Buxtehude, Bach, Franck, Sowerby and Dupre.
A Virginia native, Mr. Parris received the Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts and the Performer’s Certificate in Organ from the Eastman School of Music with post-doctoral studies in Boston and northern Germany. He serves as Choirmaster and Organist of Christ Church, Macon, Ga., the oldest Episcopal parish in the Diocese of Atlanta. Mr. Parris is known for his faithfulness to historic performance practices, as well as his specialty, the music of American composer Leo Sowerby. In 2004 he was a featured performer at the American Guild of Organists’ national convention, appearing at Walt Disney concert hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The monthly Organ at Davidson programs throughout the 2010-11 season begin at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of DCPC. The next one is Sunday, Oct. 31, the annual silent film with spine-tingling accompaniment.
