Juggling fest, football, cornfield maze, trail races

[1]Looking for something to do this weekend? You’ve got plenty of choices in and around Davidson, from home football openers at Davidson College and Hough High to college soccer and tennis tournaments to weekend’s Hurricane Hugo Juggling Fest and Vaudeville Extravaganza, also at the college. The Amazing Maize Maze – a cornfield maze – opens this weekend at Rural Hill. And the XTERRA trail running series comes to Fisher Farm Park on Sunday.
The annual Hurricane Hugo Juggling Fest, which will bring jugglers to Davidson to participate in the events between Friday and Sunday. The related Family Vaudeville Extravaganza [2] is Saturday night, with comedy, juggling, and acrobatics at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall.
Hough High School celebrates a big milestone on Friday at 7 p.m. The football team plays its first home game ever at Hough stadium, against Waddell High.
On Saturday at 6 p.m., Davidson College’s football team opens its 2010 season against Georgetown in a home game under the lights at Richardson Stadium. Get there early for the new Wildcat Fan Zone [3] – a tailgate party with games, food and fun. Also this weekend, the men’s soccer team hosts the Adidas Classic tournament. The Wildcats will take on Marist and Bowling Green in games Friday and Sunday at the Alumni Stadium on campus.
Sunday also brings the XTERRA 5- and 10-mile trail running races to Fisher Farm. Registration will be available the morning of the races.
And Sunday from 9 to noon in Huntersville, Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation is hosting an open house with historical interpreters at Holly Bend, a historic home on Neck Road, just past Rural Hill farm and next to Cowan’s Ford Wildlife Refuge.

Hurricane Hugo Juggling Festival, 5 p.m., Davidson College Alvarez College Union atrium – Check-in and registration for the annual Hurricane Hugo Juggling Festival. The evening’s events include Fire Juggling at 9 p.m. outside the Union, followed by refreshments. Continues Saturday, Sept. 4, and Sunday, Sept. 5. Details: on the festival home page.

Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Rural Hill farm, 4431 Neck Road, off Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville – OPENING DAY. Rural Hill presents the annual Amazing Maize Maze, a 7-acre labyrinth with 2 1/2 miles of pathways cut into a cornfield. This year’s theme is the Conestoga Wagon that brought Major John Davidson from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in the 18th century. Admission $10 ages 13+ and $7 for ages 5-12. Children ages 4 and under free.

Revolutionary War re-enactments, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Historic Latta Plantation, Sample Road, Huntersville – Relive the American Revolution as soldiers reenact local battles at this local historic site. Visitors can tour soldier camps, see living history demonstrations, visit the plantation house, and watch the main battles each day. (Also Sunday). Admission $7, children under 5 free. Holly Bend historic open house, 9 a.m. to noon, meet at Cowan’s Ford Wildlife Refuge observation deck, Neck Road, Huntersville – Built in 1795 by Robert Davidson, Holly Bend is just past Rural Hill farm. Follow a self-guided tour on the historical and architectural significance of the house and surrounding property.
