A team prepares to try out the Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill last year. The cornfield maze opens for another season this weekend. (David Boraks/DavidsonNews.net)

this week buttonOur community calendar this week offers many possibilities, from a chance to help plan the layout of a new Lake Davidson Nature Preserve to football, soccer and tennis at Davidson College to weekend’s Hurricane Hugo Juggling Fest and Vaudeville Extravaganza. The Amazing Maize Maze – a cornfield maze – opens this weekend at Rural Hill. And the XTERRA trail running series comes to Fisher Farm Park on Sunday.

Woodlawn School students return to campus Monday, the last of the area’s schools to declare an end to summer.

On Tuesday, Davidson Parks & Recreation hosts a public planning workshop at the site of the planned Lake Davidson Nature Preserve, behind Davidson Day School on Griffith Street. The site walk will help identify sites for future trails and a canoe/kayak launch. (See our Aug. 27 article.)

The middle of the week is quiet as everyone settles back into school and the fall routine. The weekend features the annual Hurricane Hugo Juggling Fest, which will bring jugglers to Davidson to participate in the events between Friday and Sunday. The related Family Vaudeville Extravaganza is Saturday night, with comedy, juggling, and acrobatics at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall.

On Saturday at 6 p.m., Davidson’s football team opens its 2010 season against Georgetown in a home game under the lights at Richardson Stadium. Also this weekend, the men’s soccer team hosts the Adidas Classic tournament. The Wildcats will take on Marist and Bowling Green in games Friday and Sunday at the Alumni Stadium on campus.

Sunday also brings the XTERRA 5- and 10-mile running races to Fisher Farm. Registration will still be available the morning of the race for interested runners.
