With Davidson students back in town, life is returning to campus this week. The week kicks off with a much-anticipated campus concert featuring Maroon 5. “American Idol” winner Kris Allen and British singer VV Brown are also on the bill. Wednesday brings the Freshman Cake Race, in which first-year students compete for cakes donated by local residents. The men’s soccer team takes on Pfeiffer in an exhibition game that night as well.
On Wednesday, public school students return to classes throughout Mecklenburg County.

Sunday features the 2nd annual Shalom Lake Norman Jewish Festival, which will offer live entertainment, children’s activities, and sale of traditional Jewish foods and craft items.

Maroon 5 at Davidson College, 8 p.m., Belk Arena, Baker Sports Complex, 200 Baker Dr. – Popular band Maroon 5 will perform a mix of old favorites and songs from their new album, “Hands All Over.” Special guests for this concert include Kris Allen, the winner of American Idol Season 8, and English recording artist, VV Brown. Freshman Cake Race, 5 p.m., Richardson Stadium, Davidson College – Donate a cake to support the class of 2014 as they run the 71st annual Cake Race. Davidson College Art Opening, 7-9 p.m., Van Every Gallery, Visual Arts Center, Davidson College – Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Nathaniel Rogers will give a gallery talk at a reception for the college’s annual Faculty Art Exhibition. The exhibit will feature works by Rogers, sculptor Cort Savage, and printmaker Rebekah Tolley. There is no charge to attend the reception, which begins at 7 p.m., followed by Rogers’ talk at 7:30. The exhibit will be on display from August 27 to October 6. The galleries are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. There is no charge to view the exhibits.
