Aug. 29 Shalom festival brings music, food and fun

The second Shalom Lake Norman Jewish Festival [1] is scheduled Sunday, Aug. 29, from noon to 5 p.m., bringing games, music, food and fun to Ramsey Creek Park, off N.C. 73 in Cornelius.
More than 700 people attended the first festival last year, and organizers this year have expanded the event’s hours and offerings. The festival is sponsored by the Jewish Council of Lake Norman with support from the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte.
Activities, games, rides and crafts are offered for children of all ages, and there will be a separate children’s entertainment stage.
The klezmer group Freylach Time headlines the day’s entertainment. This instrumental group will be joined by vocalist Cantor Karen Kumin providing both traditional and contemporary music, from Yiddish to Hebraic and more.
[2]Bottle dance
Also on stage will be Steven Weintraub, who has taught Jewish dancing and is recognized for his traditional version of the “Bottle Dance,” a traditional Russian, high energy dance in which the dancer balances a bottle on his head. He is an Alvin Ailey trained dancer, who has been a Yiddish dance instructor at KlexKamp since 1997. When not on stage performing Mr. Weintraub will be teaching Jewish ethnic dancing.
A variety of traditional Jewish foods will be served by The New York Bagel and Deli, including bagels, corn beef, and knishes.
The event will also be collecting cans of food for those of need, and distributed through the Jewish Family Services. The festival is free, but canned goods would be appreciated.
