Openings available in late-summer camps

It may be nearly August, but believe it or not, you can still find a summer camp for those antsy kids, if you need to. Davidson Parks & Rec has openings for the next few weeks in camps for bowling, etiquette, science, fencing, jewelry making and other topics. Also, a note about Spanish camps by Lake Norman Language Academy.

Week of August 2

Bowling – The goal this summer is to provide a place for your child to learn the skills of the game of
bowling, meet new friends and enjoy the activities that we have planned each day.
DATE August 2 – 6
TIME 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Etiquette for Today! – This interactive class divides the instruction between social education and dining education. A special emphasis is placed on laying a foundation of good manners and leadership skills. Role playing exercises and workbooks are used as fun and informative tools to give students opportunities to learn and practice. Self-esteem and confidence building, Handshakes, Meeting and Introductions, Expressions of Appreciation, Etiquette of Public Places and telephone, Everyday Table Manners, and Table Arrangement.

Pet Shop Pals – Each week offers a camp experience geared to the younger set. Activities each week will focus on a different theme, however every day will be filled with art, games, singing, dancing, stories and playtime. Please dress for mess and pack a lunch each day! All camps are Monday-Thursday. Children must be 3 by Sept. 1 and potty trained.

Fencing – The camp will cover the fundamental footwork, bladework, and tactics in the sport of Olympic fencing with focus on the weapon of epee.

Blast Off to Space – Budding rocket scientists will explore the fundamentals of rocketry and space travel. Learn about outer space as we look at the stars and solar system. Work on projects to take home including a simple telescope, a model Saturn, and a fully functional rocket. Build and launch different types of rockets during the week and on the last day of camp, launch the solid fuel rocket you build into space and watch it return to earth by parachute before taking it home to show your friends.

Kreative Kids Idol – Sing, Dance and Perform!!! Experience the fun and excitement of competing on stage as
you learn to sing and dance in solo and group numbers.

Jewelry Making – Beads, beads and more beads. Necklaces, bracelet, earrings – the children will start by stringing ready made beads – learning color and pattern but by the end of the week they
will have created their own beads out of all different materials including clay and newspaper beads. They will create outrageously beautiful jewelry. This course is excellent for increasing creativity, learning relationship between colors and pattern designs but best of all they will learn the skills to continue making jewelry for many years after this week has ended and will have several beautiful pieces to take home.

Earth Explorations – This is a great opportunity for inquisitive young minds to uncover the hidden stories in rocks, sand, and fossils. Discover the world around us, from oceans to mountains and volcanoes to earthquakes. Have fun sifting for “gemstones” and uncovering dinosaur bones. Learn about the awesome forces of nature that shape our world and learn what fossils and shells tell us about the creatures of the earth. Take-home projects are created each day as we let imaginations soar!

Week of August 16

Crime Scene Investigation – Campers will begin the class by surveying the “scene of the crime”. We will spend the week investigating various aspects of the crime and reveal the “perp” by the end!

Let’s Make and Eat Tacos in the Fiesta – Learn Spanish and have fun! Tacos are yummy and Fiestas are fun! We will start up a restaurant business. What do we need to start up? We will choose the name, hire and train the employees and follow the steps to start up a business. You will make your own tacos and salsa. We will end the week with our Fiesta for the grand opening!

Openings also are available in August at Spanish immersion camps in Davidson and Mooresville for elementary and middle school-aged children, beginner or intermediate level students.

Children start speaking Spanish day one. This is a great opportunity for kids to get a head start and build confidence before the beginning of the school year. These Spanish immersion camps are full of adventure, creativity, and fun.

Classes are taught by Abigayl Pansini, owner of Lake Norman Language Academy. Mrs. Pansini, a native Spanish speaker, is a Spanish teacher area schools. She also offers private and group classes for children and adults.
