Music, movies, wildlife cruise, ‘Oklahoma!’ and more

[1]It’s an action-packed weekend in and around Davidson, with outdoor concerts and movies, more shows for Davidson Community Players’ “Oklahoma!” and a Friday evening with events of historical and artistic interest. There’s live music at Summit Coffee and outdoors in Mooresville and Huntersville. Then on Saturday, the men of Gethsemane Baptist Church are staging a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise money for their scholarship fund.

Friday afternoon, there’s a wine and cheese reception Friday hosted by the Davidson Historical Society on the porch at the historic Houston house on Main Street.
Friday evening also features an opening reception at the Lake Norman Art League gallery in South Main Square for “Resilience,” an exhibit of artwork from the ArtWorks945 program of the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte. And shops in the Oak Street Mill in Cornelius (behind the police station) are staging a Friday night gallery crawl as well.
Mooresville’s summer outdoor music and movie series both continue Friday. The Tim Clark Band from Myrtle Beach plays Friday at 6:30 on the Town Hall Green. Then, Michael Jackson’s film “This Is It” will be screened at 8:30 at Bellingham Park.
The State Games of North Carolina continue with a variety of sporting events at area sites. And Duke Energy hosts a free outdoor symphony concert Friday at the Energy Explorium.
OUR TOWN CINEMAS
Also at the movies: Our Town Cinemas has “Toy Story 3″ on two screens, as well as “Letters to Juliet,” which theater officials says has been one of the top requests among their moviegoers lately. “Knight and Day” opens Thursday along with “Grown Ups.” And here’s a heads up: Tuesday at midnight brings the long-awaited next installment of the “Twilight” series: “Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” (Showtimes at right.)
OKLAHOMA!
Theater: “Oklahoma!” Through June 26, Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall – Davidson Community Players’ [2] production “Oklahoma!” Cassandra Wood and Jack Stevenson have the leads in this 1943 musical favorite. Shows are Thursday to Saturday, June 24-26, at 8 p.m. with an additional matinee on Saturday, June 26, at 2 p.m. Tickets $15-$22. STATE GAMES OF NORTH CAROLINA
The State Games of North Carolina offer competitions in a variety of Olympic sports at venues in Charlotte and north Mecklenburg. See our June 15 news item [5] for details.

MI-Connection board meeting, 7:30 a.m., MI-Connection Communications System headquarters, 420 S. Academy St., Mooresville – the board holds its monthly meeting, where it’s expected to vote on its 2010-11 budget.
CMS Community Forums, 6:30 p.m., South Mecklenburg HS, 8900 Park Rd., Charlotte – Community forum with school staff and school board members, on the planned comprehensive review of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. The review targets policies guiding such district operations as magnet schools, transportation, boundaries, projected enrollments, use of facilities and funding. ART EXHIBIT RECEPTION, 6-8 p.m., Lake Norman Art League Gallery, 442 S. Main St. (next to MasterWorks) – Opening reception for “Resilience,” an exhibit of artwork from the ArtWorks945 program of the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte. Wine & Cheese Open House, 6-8 p.m., Historic Houston House (Needlecraft Center), 102 S. Main St. – Davidson Historical Society invites you to a wine and cheese open house at the historic home, built by E.Q. Houston after the fire of 1906. The Needlecraft Center has been in the home since 1971. Houston also built the storefront next door, now home to The Soda Shop, and it once housed the local post office. Outdoor symphony concert, 8:15 p.m., McGuire Nuclear Station Energy Explorium – Charlotte Symphony presents a free concert on the theme “Music for Lovers” conducted by Albert George Schram, including Wedding March from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and the “Romeo and Juliet Overture.” ONStarz, a group of Duke Energy employees, will provide a prelude performance at 7 p.m. with a selection of oldies but goodies. Religion and Politics discussion, 6-7:30 p.m., Davidson College Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Davidson College professors Dr. Mary Thornberry and Dr. Anne Blue Wills will lead the discussion titled “Religious Ideals and Political Realities.” They will cover the relationship of church, state, and the Constitution. Other discussion topics include what constitutes an ideal society; what the church, government and individual Christians should do to realize this ideal; and what the boundaries should be for each. The event is free and open to the public.
