Our community calendar this week includes a pair of public hearings, on the 2010-11 budgets for the Town of Davidson and the MI-Connection Communications System, free sessions on preventing teen dating violence and family health, and an eagerly awaited premiere of “Sex and the City 2.”
The weekend brings some good music to town. On Saturday and Sunday, the North Mecklenburg Community Chorus performs its annual spring concert, “Made in America,” at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. And on Sunday afternoon, Ensemble Vermillian gives a concert of chamber music by 17th-century composers at St. Alban’s Church.
Also, Cornelius parks & rec and the American Legion will host a Memorial Day ceremony Saturday at Legion Park.

AT THE MOVIES
There may be a few “girls’ nights out” this week as the long-awaited premiere of “Sex & the City 2″ arrives in theaters. There’s a sneak peek party and fund-raiser Wednesday in Birkdale, to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Tickets are $100 and include admission to a pre-show cocktail party at Dressler’s Restaurant.
Meanwhile, Our Town Cinemas in Davidson will open “Sex & The City 2″ on two screens on Thursday, May 27. Also at Our Town Cinemas, “Racing Dreams” will be held over for another week. The film follows three young racers as they compete in the World Karting Association National Pavement Series. One of the featured drivers is Annabeth Barnes of Statesville, who is now racing Legend and stock cars. (See showtimes at right for details.)

Protecting Teens from Dating Violence, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Cornelius Police Department, 21440 Catawba Ave., Cornelius – Learn how to protect your teenagers from dating violence. United Family Services, the Cornelius Police Department and Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville are partnering to host a free talk for parents and teenagers on dating violence. The discussion will focus on the warning signs of dating violence, available community resources for victims, and ways to keep your teens safe and healthy. Family Health Q&A session, 6:30 p.m., McKinney Academy, 412 Armour St. – McKinney Academy hosts the last event in its wellness lecture series. A panel of 5 experts – including pediatricians, a nutritionist, and an occupational therapist – will answer audience questions on infectious prevention, vitamin supplementation, herbal remedies, ear infections, developmental skills and any questions you’d like to ask.
