Davidson Weekend CalendarIt’s Davidson College reunion weekend, with a horde of alumni due back in town for festivities on campus. Welcome alums! Elsewhere in town, it’s the annual Art on the Green festival downtown, the season’s first Concert on the Green Sunday (featuring the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble), and an exclusive screening of the North Carolina-produced film “Wesley,” about the life of John Wesley.

ART ON THE GREEN

This weekend Davidson hosts the annual Art on the Green festival Saturday, April 24, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, April 24, noon to 4 p.m., on the Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road. All events are free.

Forty-eight artists are showing and demonstrating their work in the two-day juried fine arts festival, including ceramics, sculpture, oil, pastel and watercolor, photography, woods, metals and fine jewelry. In addition attendees will be treated to demonstrations, food & beverages from local restaurants and live music.

HISTORY WALKING TOURS

During Art on the Green, Davidson Historical Society will offering a walking tour of historic downtown Davidson beginning at 1 p.m. both days of the festival. For more information please visit the Davidson Historical Society booth.

CONCERT ON THE GREEN

After the close of the festival on Sunday, Davidson College Symphony and Davidson College Jazz Ensemble will lead off the 2010 Concerts on the Green series, from 6-8 p.m. on the Village Green.

‘WESLEY’ SCREENING AND DIRECTOR VISIT

The Rev. John Jackman of Winston-Salem will be in Davidson on Friday for screenings of his independent film “Wesley,” about the life of John Wesley – the 18th century founder of the Methodist movement. The movie was shot in North Carolina and will have an exclusive limited run at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson. See our preview, “Director visits for screening of N.C. indy film ‘Wesley’” [1]

FUND-RAISERS: WINE AND SONG

A pair of fund-raisers on are the schedule involving wine and song. On Thursday, it’s an Earth Day “Toast the Earth” wine tasting for Davidson Lands Conservancy, with a preview of the 2010 Davidson Farmers Market season, at Summit Coffee. Meanwhile, Bailey Middle School Band hosts a “Bailey, Bows & BBQ” fund-raiser Saturday at Bailey Road Park, with food and music by a variety of local bands. CHARLOTTE’S WEB

Finally, the weekend calendar includes the final four performance of “Charlotte’s Web,” by Davidson Community Players’ Connie Co. children’s theater group. Performances are both Saturday and Sunday. Times and ticket info below.

THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 6:30 p.m., Davidson College Belk Arena – Third annual Davidson Tigers v. J.V. Washam Hawks charity staff basketball game. The event benefits the Ada Jenkins Center, and pits teachers from the rival elementary schools playing for bragging rights. The Hawks will be the defending champs, having pulled out a squeaker win in 2009. Free. Donations to Ada Jenkins Center collected at the door.

THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 7-9 p.m., behind Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main Street – “Toast the Earth” fund-raiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy and preview of the Davidson Farmers Market summer season. With local wines and ciders, welcome to new farmers, presentation on open space by DLC. Tickets: $20 each, two for $35. Space limited. THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 7:30 p.m., Davidson College Chambers Building, Hance Auditorium – Lecture: “On the Origin of Stories,” by Brian Boyd, English professor at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and a distinguished scholar of Nabokov and Russian literature. Co-sponsored by the English, Philosophy, and Biology Departments and by the Public Lectures Committee. Free. Bring your bicycle.
