Gallery crawl, Art on the Green just ahead; new this year: art films at Our Town Cinemas

It’s April and that means the annual month of art and cultural activities is in the offing in Davidson and north Mecklenburg. This year’s events include the Gallery Crawl Friday evening, April 16, the two-day Art on the Green festival (April 24-25), and the start of another season of Concerts on the Green on April 25.

And this year’s festival has a new element: Screenings of a series of art films at Davidson’s new movie theater, Our Town Cinemas, in Sadler Square.

APRIL 16 GALLERY CRAWL

The gallery crawl through Davidson and Cornelius is Friday, April 16, from 6-9:30 p.m. This year’s crawl will include new businesses at Exit 30, Main Street and South Main Street in Davidson, and downtown Cornelius.

Stops on the crawl will include various Davidson and Cornelius galleries and businesses, the two Town Halls, and the Cornelius Arts Center/Community Arts Project, in the Oak Street Mill. Many venues will host visiting artists, who will be showing or demonstrating their work.

You can park in Davidson or Cornelius and ride the free trolley between venues.

ART ON THE GREEN APRIL 24-25

This annual art and craft exhibition and community festival takes place on the Village Green, at Main Street and Concord Road. Hours are Saturday April 24, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, April 25, noon to 4 p.m.

At the center is a juried art festival, bringing 48 artists from throughout the region to sell and demonstrate their work. Community Arts Project of Cornelius also will offer demonstrations during the weekend. The event also features food and live music.

Davidson Historical Society also will be offering historical walking tours of downtown at 1 p.m. both days of the festival. Stop by the Historical Society booth for details.

DAVIDSON SYMPHONY AND JAZZ

Davidson College Symphony Orchestra and Davidson College Jazz Ensemble will headline the first 2010 Concert on the Green Sunday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m. on the Village Green.

ART MOVIES at OUR TOWN CINEMAS

This year during April is for Arts, Our Town Cinemas will screen a series of art films from the 2009 Charlotte Film Festival. Showings will be April 16-22.

Films will include:

“Warrior Champions” is the emotional and inspiring story of a group of severely wounded American soldiers, as they fight to turn nightmares of war into Olympic dreams.

“Trust Us: This Is All Made Up,” a comedy exploring the partnership of Second City veterans TJ Jagodowksi and David Pasquesi.

“Goodnight Irene,” in which two men embark on a journey to find a missing woman, driven by friendship, a desire for freedom, and a wish to taste life to the fullest. (English & Portuguese w/ English subtitles)
