Ada Jenkins’ Fire benefit, Habitat car show ahead

fund-raisers logoAda Jenkins Center’s Fire 5k/Fun-Run and Barbecue fund-raiser will be April 17 on Davidson’s West Side. The following day brings the third annual Habitat for Humanity Car Show. There’s a fund-raising celebration and auction Saturday, April 10, for the Nepal Orphans Home. Also, the Davidson Lands Conservancy is auctioning a handsome rowboat to raise money for its activities. And it’s that time of year for fund-raising golf tournaments. Davidson Day and the Lions Club have April tourneys in the works.

ADA JENKINS ‘FIRE’

Ada Jenkins Center at 212 Gamble St. on Davidson’s West Side will have its 2nd annual “Fire” 5k, Family Fun Run & BBQ Festival on Saturday, April 17.

Registration fee for the race is $25 in advance, and $35 the day of the event. Registration for the Run begins at 8 a.m. with the Race start at 10 a.m.

Race registration includes barbecue feast and music afterward, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Separate barbecue tickets are $10.

The festival includes a barbecue cook-off competition, local restaurants, celebrities, live music, and entertainment for children. Take-away meals available.

NEPAL ORPHANS HOME FUND-RAISER

A celebration and fund-raiser recognizing the courage and vision of Davidsonian Michael Hess and his work in Nepal is planned Saturday, April 5, 4:30-6:30 p.m., at Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House, 218 Concord Road.

The event celebrates 5 years of the Nepal Orphans Home, which has been rescuing Nepali children from poverty, neglect and abuse.

They’ll have a silent auction with signed books from local authors, local pottery and artwork, items from local businesses, and sports memorabilia, including game programs signed by Carolina Panthers players, a Stephen Curry autographed basketball, a hat signed by NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and a scraped side panel from NASCAR driver Mark Martin’s car. The event is free and casual and open to the public.

HABITAT CAR SHOW APRIL 18

The 3rd annual Habitat for Humanity Car Show, hosted by Our Towns Habitat for Humanity, will be held on April 18 from 2-6 p.m. in the Habitat ReStore parking lot, 20414 N. Main St., Cornelius. Proceeds from the event will benefit Our Towns Habitat for Humanity’s Youth United group.

Youth United fully funds and builds a new home every other year. They are building their four home currently, which should be completed by May.

This year’s entries will comprise of sports cars, muscle cars, vintage cars, replicas, hot rods and show cars. Admission to the Car Show is free and visitors will have the chance to buy raffle tickets for $5. Show entry fees are $20 for early registration and $25 on the day of the event. The car registration fee includes five raffle tickets. The event will include food, raffle prizes, a DJ, entertainment and more.

TOAST THE EARTH

The Davidson Lands Conservancy and the Davidson Farmers Market invite you to sample an array of local wines and hard ciders on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

The event, on the farmers market grounds behind Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main Street, Davidson, is a fund-raiser for DLC and a preview of the DFM’s summer season.

The wines and ciders, produced by the McRitchie Winery and Ciderworks nearby in the Yadkin Valley of NC, are selected and distributed by Executive Wines Inc, and are available at Summit Coffee.

LAUGH MS

The 3rd Annual LaughMS comedy fund-raiser for Multiple Sclerosis is scheduled April 27, at The Comedy Zone at The Galway Hooker, Cornelius. Doors open at 7 p.m., with comedy at 8. Drew Thomas of Atlanta, who was born in Jamaica and raised in the Bronx, NY, is headlining the show.

 Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.lkncomedyzone.com. The Galway Hooker full dinner menu will be available before and during the show.

LaughMS was formed by two couples with a personal relationship to multiple sclerosis. Over the past two years they have donated approximately $7,250 to the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of NMSS. LaughMS will raise money for On the Shoulders of Giants: The Carolina’s Campaign to Cure MS, a volunteer led research campaign part of the National MS Society, Mid-Atlantic Chapter.
