Author and poet Donald Mager speaks Thursday, April 1, at the monthly meeting of Charlotte Writers’ Club North. And an April Fool’s a cappella concert is on tap at Davidson College. Ben & Jerry’s hosts a “Give a Pint, Get a Pint” blood drive Friday. And there’s a Davidson Farmers Market on Saturday next to Town Hall.

On Thursday, April 1, Charlotte Writers’ Club North will welcome author, poet and Johnson C. Smith University professor Donald Mager as its guest speaker. He’s Dean of the College of Arts & Letters at JC Smith and has published more than 200 poems and translations from German, Czech and Russian. His latest work, Us Four Plus Four, is an anthology of translations from eight major Soviet-era Russian poets. It is unique because it tracks almost a half century of their careers by simply placing the poems each wrote to the others in chronological order. The Club meets at 7 pm on the first Thursday of each month at The Sanctuary of Davidson, 108 S. Main Street.

The Davidson College Music Department and Davidson College’s co-ed acapella group Androgyny team up for the first time ever to bring you The April Fool’s Concert at 7:30pm in Tyler-Tallman Hall, Sloan Music Center, on April 1. One hundred percent of the proceeds from ticket sales for this benefit concert will go towards a fund allowing Androgyny to distribute its music to every student, faculty, and staff member of Davidson College, for free. Join Ben & Jerry’s, located at 202 S. Main St., Davidson, Friday, April 2, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. for the Give a pint, Get a pint Blood Drive. Live music is on tap this weekend at both Summit Coffee and The Brickhouse. Summit has Sandcrawler with Marcie Hernandez on Thursday, and Rusty Knox Band Friday. (Saturday is to be announced.) Brickhouse has Phil Moore with Spin Thursday, Golden Eagles Friday, and Captain Lou on Saturday.

The Davidson Farmers Market Tailgate Market, with local farmers and vendors selling meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items, is open this Saturday, April 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, in downtown Davidson next to Town Hall. Good Friday will be a quiet day around town. Davidson Town Hall and other public offices are closed. So are Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and other schools.

EGG HUNTS

Davidson’s McConnell neighborhood hosts its annual neighborhood egg hunt on Saturday. Check your neighborhood association info for more about that. Meanwhile, the schedule includes a number of public egg hunts, including:

MOORESVILLE EASTER EGG HUNT, Saturday, April 3, 2 p.m. – Bellingham Park, Mooresville – Community Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by Mooresville Recreation Department. LATTA PLANTATION EASTER EGG HUNT, Saturday, April 3, 11 a.m., Latta Plantation historic site, Sample Road, Huntersville – Children ages 1-10 can hunt for toy and candy filled eggs across the plantation. Hunts will be at 11:00am (ages 1-3), 12:30pm (ages 4-6), and 2:00pm (ages 7-10). EASTER EVENTS

Area Christians will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Sunday, April 4. Both the Lake Norman YMCA and Davidson United Methodist Church have sunrise services.

For its Easter Sunday service, River’s Edge Church, located at 412 Armour St. will host a performance at 10 a.m. by the Christian ballet company Paradosi of Seattle. Paradosi also will offer a dance workshop on Saturday, April 3, at Kingdom’s Feet Studio in Cornelius. More information: 980-475-1788.

HOLY WEEK AT DAVIDSON COLLEGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Main Street and Concord Road – Maundy Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m., worship service with Communion at 6:30 p.m. in the Congregation House; Good Friday, April 2, noon, worship service in the DCPC sanctuary; Saturday, April 3, Easter Vigil, 7:30 p.m., worship service with Communion in the DCPC sanctuary; Easter Sunday, April 4, worship services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. The sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated at the 8:30 service.

ST. ALBAN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH – The church, at 301 Caldwell Lane, off Concord Road, will have a variety of services this week. DAVIDSON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH – 233 S. Main St. – Holy Thursday, April 1 – 7 p.m., led by the Compline Choir, childcare provided; Good Friday, April 2 – 7 p.m., Led by the Chancel Choir, childcare provided; Easter Sunday, April 4, 6 a.m., Sunrise Service in the chapel; also 8, 9:30, and 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Holy Communion will be served at the 6 and 8 a.m. services.

LAKE FOREST CHURCH has four worship services at two locations this Easter Sunday, April 4. Services will be at the church home on Gilead Road in Huntersville at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m., with Lead Pastor Mike Moses. Pastor of Mission Michael Flake will lead a 10 a.m. service at Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St. in Davidson.

UU FELLOWSHIP OF LAKE NORMAN – The local Unitarian Universalist group meets at Davidson College Tomlinson residence hall conference room Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Amy Hartman will lead the group’s first Flower Communion service, with spiritual nurturing, music, children’s story, talk and conversation. Doors will open at 10:30 am with the service starting at 11, followed by refreshments and conversation. People are asked to bring a flower of their choice, either from their own gardens, or from a field or roadside.

SUNRISE SERVICE AT THE YMCA – The Lake Norman YMCA will host its 3rd annual Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 4. It begins at 7 a.m., overlooking the lake in the natural setting of the outdoor chapel. It is a non-denominational, spiritually-inclusive Easter service supported by the Lake Norman YMCA Christian Emphasis Committee. Led by Kyle Wallace, lead pastor of The Church of the Good Shepherd. The Church of the Good Shepherd meets at Lake Norman YMCA gymnasium each Sunday and will follow the Sunrise Service with their own Easter Service at 10 a.m., also led by Pastor Wallace.
