Davidson College's crew hosts charity regatta for Habitat for Humanity Saturday.

Friday is Arbor Day in Davidson, with an afternoon celebration on the Village Green, organized by the Town of Davidson’s Natural Assets and Tree Advisory Board. Events leading up to the day a lunchtime seminar Thursday at Town Hall on home gardening. Performances of “Violet” continue at Davidson Community Players’ Armour Street Theatre. Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers speaks about “green” energy during a conference Saturday at Davidson College. And Davidson Farmers Market hosts another winter tailgate market Saturday downtown. On Saturday, Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers will give a lecture titled “The Energy Industry’s Search for Greener Power.” It’s the final lecture of the 2009-10 Bank of America Lecture Series, “Responding to the Global Energy Crisis: Technology, Policy and Security.” He speaks at 7:30 p.m. in Alvarez College Union 900 Room. Arbor Day events this weekend in Davidson include today’s brown bag lunch discussion on “You Don’t Eat Grass — Grow What You Eat!” led by Davidson Farmers Market manager Mary Jane Leach and Know Your Farms founder Christy Shi. From noon to 1 p.m. at Davidson Town Hall, they’ll talk about growing food in the home landscape. Then Friday from 2:30 to 4 p.m., join local students, town staff and elected officials as the town hosts its first Davidson Arbor Day celebration. Thursday night at Davidson’s Alvarez College Union, 900 Room, come to a free screening of the documentary “Flow: For Love of Water”. Directed by Irena Salina, it addresses water’s imperiled status across the globe by highlighting alarming crises on the local level. Followed by a discussion with the film’s co-producer, Davidson native Gill Holland Jr. Details on the college website. ^[4]

Performances continue Thursday through Sunday of Davidson Community Players’ production of “Violet,” a contemporary musical by Brian Crawley and Jeanine Tesori. Set in 1964 in the Deep South of the Civil Rights Era, it is based on “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” a short story by Doris Betts of Statesville. Davidson Farmers Market holds another of its twice-monthly winter tailgate markets Saturday 9 a.m. to noon next to Town Hall. Davidson College Crew invites Davidson family and friends for the first “Row for a Home Charity Regatta” at the Davidson Lake Campus. Never heard of crew? Never seen a race? Come join us to learn more about this Olympic sport, to enjoy a day at the lake, and to participate in family activities sponsored by the Davidson College Habitat organization. There will be food and “Row for a Home” merchandise for sale, with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. The regatta takes place Saturday, March 20, starting at 9 a.m.. If music is your thing: “An Evening of American Art Song” is planned Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Davidson College’s Sloan Music Center Tyler-Tallman Hall. College artist associate in voice Diane Thornton and pianist Grant Jones will perform, premiering four songs by Davidson area composer Mary Armistead-Jones. The program will also include music by Leonard Bernstein, Ernest Charles, Aaron Copland, Lee Hoiby, and Ben Moore. Free. For information call 704-894-2848. There’s also a free bicycle and bicycle parts swap meet Saturday 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at The Cycle Path, 20900 N. Main St., Cornelius. Sponsored by Cycle Path, and Piedmont Area Single Track Alliance. Sellers invited, arrive before 9 a.m., set up a 10×10 space. No fees for sellers or buyers. Items must be bicycle related. Buyers plan to pay with cash. Bike shop will be open. Also on Saturday, Davidson College Presbyterian Church holds its annual Day of Service, beginning with check-in at 8 a.m., and worship at 8:30. Teams depart to project sites at 9 am. Volunteers will go to local service agencies to complete needed projects. Register at dcpc.org ^[10]
