On Saturday, March 20, contralto Diane Thornton and pianist Grant Jones will perform “An Evening of American Art Song,” songs by American composers, as well as the premiere of four new songs by Davidson composer Mary Armistead-Jones. The free concert is at 7:30 p.m. in Sloan Music Center’s Tyler-Tallman Hall on the Davidson College campus.
Ms. Thornton is Artist Associate in Voice at Davidson College. She has gained critical acclaim across the country as a chamber musician, opera singer, recitalist, and concert artist.
Grant Jones, whose musical studies began early and continued through college, turned his career interests to cultural anthropology but continued to perform as an chamber musician and vocal accompanist. He held academic positions at Hamilton College and Davidson College, where he is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology.
Mary Armistead-Jones, who met her husband Grant while studying piano and composition at Florida State University, taught piano at Hamilton College and then privately after moving to Davidson. She has had several premieres of her works at Davidson College and subsequent performances elsewhere.
