Our calendar in and around Davidson this week gets off to a busy start Monday with a planning workshop in east Davidson, a report from the citizen task force studying high water bills in north Mecklenburg, and a lecture about the future of the news business at Davidson College. The week also brings theater auditions and performances, a Town Board budget retreat, music and another of Davidson Farmers Market’s winter tailgate markets Saturday. Those and other events below.

Don’t forget, Davidson Public Library invites you the first and third Mondays of each month for a 25-35 minute storytime that consists of books, flannel board stories, finger games and musical activities geared toward an audience of 3-5 year olds. Preschool Storytime takes place at 10:15 a.m.
At 2 p.m. Monday, Davidson planners will host a public planning workshop for a renovation that would create a new nature-focused pre-school on Mayes Road. Details in our March 12 preview on the Real Estate page [2].
Ed Williams, former editorial page editor at The Charlotte Observer and the current Batten Professor of Public Policy at Davidson, will present “Losing the News: How the communications revolution is good – and bad – for America.” The lecture is Monday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Semans Lecture Hall of the Davidson College Visual Arts Center, at Main and Griffith streets, is free and open to the public. The Davidson Community Players will hold auditions for actors and actresses of all ages, shapes and sizes for its upcoming summer production of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!. Auditions takes place Monday, March 15 and Tuesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Armour Street Theater located at 307 Armour St., Davidson. See Theatre Notes [4].
Other events at the college this week include a Saturday lecture by Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers and a discussion Tuesday titled “Is Religious Belief Immoral?” with a college philosopher and a religion/ethics professor. Mr. Rogers speaks Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall as part of this year’s Bank of America lecture series. On Tuesday, March 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the Alvarez College Union 900 Room, Associate Professor of Philosophy Paul Studtmann and Doug Ottati, Craig Family Distinguished Professor of Religion and Ethics, will lead the discussion on religious belief.
Also on Tuesday, March 16, McKinney Academy and McKinney Care Academy will host an open house for prospective parents, starting at 10:30 a.m. Call the school at 704-895-9664 to RSVP.
Tuesday night brings another Organ at Davidson concert at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Organist Timothy Belk performs a “Bach Birthday Bash.” See our preview in The Guide. [5]
Join Davidson College biologist Pat Peroni for a Tour of the Kincaid Greenway Trail on Wednesday, March 17, at 9 a.m. Dr. Peroni will guide participants in a walking tour of the vegetation and wildlife along the Kincaid Trail. Meet at the trailhead parking area just off South Street in Davidson between Davidson Elementary School and the Antiquity Cornelius neighborhood.
Also Wednesday, the Davidson Town Board holds a budget planning retreat all day at Davidson Village Inn. The meeting will include discussion of potential “personnel implications” of next year’s town budget. Details in our Monday preview [6].
Performances continue this week of Davidson Community Players’ production of “Violet,” a contemporary musical by Brian Crawley and Jeanine Tesori. Set in 1964 in the Deep South of the Civil Rights Era, it is based on “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” a short story by Doris Betts of Statesville. Shows are Thursday through Sunday. Christy Shi (founder of Know Your Farms LLC) and Mary Jane Leach (director of the Davidson Farmers Market) will lead a discussion on growing food in the home landscape. “You Don’t Eat Grass: Grow What You Eat!” takes place from 12-1 p.m. on Thursday, March 18 in the Davidson Town Hall Board Room.
The Davidson Farmers Market holds its tailgate market with local farmers and vendors selling meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items. The market is open every other Saturday in the winter from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., held in downtown Davidson next to Town Hall. For more information, visit www.davidsonfarmersmarket.org [8]. Davidson College Crew invites Davidson family and friends for the first “Row for a Home Charity Regatta” at the Davidson Lake Campus. Never heard of crew? Never seen a race? Come join us to learn more about this Olympic sport, to enjoy a day at the lake, and to participate in family activities sponsored by the Davidson College Habitat organization. There will be food and “Row for a Home” merchandise for sale, with all proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. The regatta takes place Saturday, March 20, starting at 8:30 a.m..
