Davidson Community Players will host a free screening of the movie “Boycott” next Thursday, Feb. 11, in a program that provides a bit of context for the theater group’s March production of the Broadway hit “Violet.”
The screening begins at 7 p.m., at Our Town Cinemas in Sadler Square, off Griffith Street. (NOTE: As of Feb. 5, reservations for this event were all taken.)
“Boycott” is set in Montgomery, Ala., at the start of the American civil rights movement. It is a historical narrative using file footage and re-enacted scenes to captures the prevailing sentiments of the period.
“Boycott” stars Jeffrey Wright as The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Carmen Ejogo as Mrs. Coretta Scott King, and Terrence Dashon Howard as The Rev. Ralph Abernathy.
The event lays the foundation for the Davidson Community Players’ March production of “Violet,” by Brian Crawley and Jeanine Tesori. The contemporary musical combines a powerful story with an energetic gospel, country rock and rhythm-and-blues score.
The story is based on “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” a short story by Doris Betts of Statesville, N.C. “Violet” is set in 1964 in the Deep South during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement and follows the growth and enlightenment of a bitter, young woman accidentally scarred by her father.
In hopes that a TV evangelist can cure her, she embarks on a bus journey from her sleepy North Carolina town to Oklahoma – along the way meeting a young black soldier who teaches her about beauty, love, courage and what it means to be an outsider.
In addition to the film screening, the Davidson Community Players will also host a gospel choir concert in partnership with PARC (Town of Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation & Culture) during February’s Black History Month.
