Organist plays music from 4 centuries Feb. 16

Michael Rowland, Artist Associate at Davidson College’s Music Department and Associate Director of Music at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, plays the next installment in the Organ at Davidson series Tuesday, Feb. 16, at DCPC.
Mr. Rowland will play works that range in time from Buxtehude, Saint-Saens, Jongen, Brahms and Pinkham to Petr Eben. Eben’s piece, “Homage to Buxtehude,” quotes several themes from Buxtehude organ works (especially the opening piece in this recital) and treats them with great humor. The last movement of the piece satirizes a few modern French composers, as well. Organ lovers can test their knowledge as they try to identify them.
His recital in DCPC’s Organ at Davidson series begins at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary on Tuesday, Feb. 16. It is accessible from the Concord Road side or the walkway onto the Davidson College campus at the BB&T corner on Main Street..
A Salisbury resident, Michael Rowland is a graduate of Wake Forest University, Boston University and the Peabody Conservatory. In addition to his work with Davidson College and major role at DCPC, the featured performer will also play on the Charlotte Chamber Music series March 2, in a piano/violin/cello trio by Fanny Mendelssohn.
His concert is on DCPC’s rebuilt Wicks organ, the dedication of which in 2006 gave rise to the Organ at Davidson series. Its programs continue to draw organ lovers from increasing distances to series events.
Concerts are free with donations gratefully accepted toward expanding the series. Friends of the Organ welcomes new members to assist with artist receptions and publicity. A reception in the parlor follows each recital in the series. More details available at www.dcpc.org.
The next program–Bach Birthday Bash, on Tuesday, March 16—takes place at the same time (7:30 p.m.) and place. All are welcome to this annual celebration..
