A fishing team shows off its catch at one of the daily weigh-ins during the November FLW tournament.
Last month’s FLW Northern Regional college fishing tournament on Lake Norman, which included daily weigh-ins on Davidson’s Village Green, will air on TV this weekend. The tournament and local events will be featured on “FLW Outdoors Programming” Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on the Versus HD cable TV channel.
The Nov. 7-9 tournament brought 40 college-aged anglers on 20 teams to Davidson and Lake Norman, along with family, sponsors, and truckloads of TV equipment. The fishing teams departed every morning from Blythe Landing park in Cornelius and returned for weigh-ins every afternoon on the Village Green.
Local tourism officials estimate the tournament was directly responsible for about $80,000 in revenues at local businesses. Visitors booked a total of 172 hotel room nights at local hotels, including 129 at Davidson’s Homewood Suites, the host hotel.
Davidson College was the host institution and received a $5,000 check from FLW. Members of the tournament organizing committee included Visit Lake Norman, the Town of Davidson, Davidson College, and Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation.
The 1-hour cable show could bring Davidson and the region international TV exposure on Versus and partner channels in Europe, Africa and Asia, according to Visit Lake Norman.
