Turkey Trot 5K on Sat. aids Free Clinic; Sun. sale benefits women’s shelter

FundRaisersbugFund-raisers this week in and around Davidson include a Saturday 5K race starting on the Village Green that will raise money for the Free Clinic of Our Towns, a Rake-A-Thon for the college’s Habitat for Humanity chapter, and a Sunday sale by Main Street shops to benefit the Salvation Army’s Women’s Shelter.

‘SHELTER OUR SISTERS’

The Village Store and Sanctuary Gallery on Main Street will host a “Shelter Our Sisters” holiday benefit sale on Sunday, Nov. 22, to raise money for the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope Women’s Shelter. The benefit, which also aims to raise awareness of the shelter and its programs, will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The two shops are side-by-side, Sanctuary at 108 S. Main St., and the Village Store at 110 S. Main St.

They’ll have holiday refreshments, music and prize drawings. Ten percent of the day’s proceeds will directly benefit homeless women and children in need. Bring a donation of $5, or contributed needed items (such as new towels, blankets, diapers, baby wipes, baby food or formula) and you’ll be entered in a drawing for a piece of artwork or $100 store gift certificate.

The Salvation Army Center of Hope provides food, shelter, clothes, medical care and training to homeless women and children. While the facility has 204 beds, it frequently houses as many as 300 people – making it the largest women and children’s homeless shelter in the southeast.

For more information about this event, please visit the Village Store website www.thevillagestore.com. To learn more about the Salvation Army women’s shelter, visit www.salvationarmycharlotte.org/.

SATURDAY 5K

Pre-registration continues through Thursday for the Davidson Turkey Trot, a 5k race Saturday, Nov. 21, that will benefit the Free Clinic of Our Towns at Ada Jenkins Center.

The course, which begins and ends at the Village Green, takes runners through historic town neighborhoods.

Pre-registration is $15, and includes a T-shirt. Register online at active.com. On race day, Saturday, Nov. 21, check in begins at 8:30 with the start time set for 9 a.m. The race is sanctioned by USA Track & Field

Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Davidson College is organizing and providing the volunteers for the event.

The Free Clinic of Our Towns is a community-wide volunteer organization dedicated to providing free medical care to the uninsured in the north Mecklenburg and south Iredell region.

RAKE-A-THON 2009

Students from Davidson College’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter are raking leaves for local residents this weekend (Saturday) and the next two Saturdays (Nov. 14 and 21), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., to raise money for their next home build. Organizer Zaynah Johnson said they have one team this weekend, and multiple teams lined up the next two for the community service project.

A lot of students want to be involved in some kind of physical activity with the Habitat chapter, but they can’t always work on a Wildcat house, Ms. Johnson said. The leaf-raking helps fulfill that and raise money to build a house. A $15 donation is suggested, though the chapter welcomes larger amounts.

Questions: Email Ms. Johnson at zajohnson@davidson.edu.
